UPI Payment Failed But Money Got Debited โ€” What Now?

You sent a UPI payment, your bank debited the money, but the transaction shows "Failed" on your app. The receiver didn't get the money either. Where did it go?

This is one of the most common and frustrating UPI problems in India. The good news โ€” your money is safe and will come back. This guide explains exactly why this happens and how to get your refund quickly.

Important: This guide is specifically about transactions where money left your bank account but the payment shows as failed. If your transaction shows "Declined" or money was never debited, see our UPI error codes & fixes guide. If money was debited and the receiver didn't get it (but status shows "Success"), see our UPI refund not received guide.

Why Does This Happen?

A UPI payment involves multiple systems communicating in real time โ€” your UPI app, your bank (remitter), NPCI's UPI switch, and the receiver's bank (beneficiary). The transaction can break at any point:

1. Server Timeout

Your bank processes the debit, but the response from NPCI or the beneficiary bank doesn't come back within the timeout window (usually 30 seconds). Your bank deducted the money, but the transaction is marked "Failed" because the confirmation loop never completed.

2. NPCI Switch Failure

NPCI acts as the middleman between banks. If NPCI's UPI switch experiences heavy load or a glitch, it may fail to relay the credit instruction to the beneficiary bank โ€” even though the debit already happened.

3. Beneficiary Bank Rejected Late

The receiver's bank received the credit request but rejected it after your bank already debited the amount. Common reasons: receiver's account is closed, frozen, or has restrictions.

4. Network Drop Mid-Transaction

If your internet connection drops after the debit instruction is sent but before the full transaction completes, your app shows "Failed" even though money was deducted.

5. Peak-Hour Overload

During salary days (1st, 7th of month), festivals, or month-end, UPI handles over 1 billion transactions daily. Server overload causes timeouts that lead to this exact problem.

"Pending" vs "Failed" vs "Declined" โ€” Know the Difference

Understanding the status helps you decide what to do:

Status Money Debited? What It Means What to Do
Pending Yes Transaction is still being processed by NPCI/bank Wait 48 hours โ€” it may complete or auto-reverse
Failed Yes Transaction failed after debit โ€” money stuck in transit Auto-reversal will happen; raise dispute if delayed
Failed No Transaction rejected before debit No action needed โ€” retry the payment
Declined No Bank refused the transaction upfront (wrong PIN, low balance, limit exceeded) Fix the issue and retry
Deemed Yes NPCI couldn't confirm success or failure Treated like failed โ€” auto-reversal applies

Key point: If status is "Failed" and money is debited, the money sits in a "suspense account" at your bank or NPCI. It hasn't gone to anyone โ€” it's in limbo and will be returned.

How Auto-Reversal Works (NPCI Mandate)

As per NPCI and RBI guidelines, failed UPI transactions where money is debited must be automatically reversed:

  • Timeline: Refund within T+5 business days (5 working days from the transaction date)
  • RBI circular (September 2019): Banks must auto-reverse failed transactions within the prescribed TAT. For delays, the bank must pay โ‚น100 per day as compensation to the customer
  • No action needed from you for auto-reversal โ€” it's the bank's responsibility
  • The refund goes back to the same bank account from which the money was debited

How to Check If Auto-Reversal Happened

  1. Check your bank SMS alerts โ€” you'll get a credit message when the reversal happens
  2. Check your bank statement via net banking or mobile banking app
  3. Look for a credit entry with narration like "UPI REVERSAL" or "REFUND" or "REV"
  4. The reversed amount will match the exact debited amount

Tip: Don't rely only on the UPI app to show the refund. Sometimes the bank reverses the money but the app still shows "Failed." Always check your actual bank balance.

Step-by-Step: Check Your Transaction Status

Before doing anything, confirm the transaction status and note down key details.

Google Pay (GPay)

  1. Open Google Pay โ†’ tap your profile picture (top right)
  2. Tap "See all payment activity"
  3. Find the failed transaction and tap on it
  4. Note down: UPI Transaction ID, UPI Reference Number (UTR), date, amount
  5. Check if it says "Refund initiated" or "Refund completed"
  6. If no refund after 5 business days, tap "Get help" โ†’ "Payment issue"

PhonePe

  1. Open PhonePe โ†’ tap "History" (clock icon at bottom)
  2. Find and tap the transaction
  3. Note the Transaction ID and UTR number
  4. If status shows "Failed" with money debited, tap "Need Help?"
  5. Check if PhonePe shows an expected refund date

Paytm

  1. Open Paytm โ†’ go to "Balance & History" โ†’ "Passbook"
  2. Select "UPI" section โ†’ find the transaction
  3. Note the Order ID, UPI Ref ID, and Transaction ID
  4. Check if refund is already initiated under the transaction details
  5. If not, tap "Help" โ†’ "Payment related issue" โ†’ "Money deducted, transaction failed"

BHIM App

  1. Open BHIM โ†’ go to "Transactions" tab
  2. Tap on the failed transaction
  3. Note the UPI Reference Number
  4. Tap "Raise Concern" if no refund has been initiated

Always save these details: UPI Transaction ID, UTR/UPI Reference Number, transaction date, amount, and screenshots. You'll need them for disputes and complaints.

How to Raise a Dispute in Your UPI App

If auto-reversal hasn't happened within 5 business days, raise a formal dispute:

Google Pay

  1. Open the failed transaction โ†’ tap "Get help"
  2. Select "Money debited but payment failed"
  3. Google Pay will auto-check with the bank
  4. If unresolved, select "Contact us" โ†’ describe the issue
  5. Google Pay typically resolves disputes within 7-10 business days

PhonePe

  1. Open the failed transaction โ†’ tap "Need Help?"
  2. Select "I was charged but payment failed"
  3. PhonePe will raise a dispute with your bank via NPCI
  4. Track dispute status in Help โ†’ My Tickets
  5. Resolution time: 7-15 business days

Paytm

  1. Open the transaction โ†’ tap "Help"
  2. Select "Money deducted, transaction failed"
  3. Paytm will lodge a complaint and provide a ticket number
  4. Track under Help โ†’ My Issues
  5. Follow up if no resolution within 10 business days

BHIM

  1. Open the failed transaction โ†’ tap "Raise Concern"
  2. Select the appropriate issue category
  3. BHIM routes the complaint directly through NPCI
  4. Check status under "Complaints" section

Contact Your Bank Directly

If the UPI app dispute doesn't resolve the issue within 15 days, escalate to your bank:

How to File a Bank Complaint

  1. Call your bank's customer care โ€” explain that a UPI transaction failed but money was debited
  2. Provide: UPI Reference Number, transaction date, amount, and your bank account number
  3. Ask for a complaint/ticket number and expected resolution date
  4. Visit your branch if phone support doesn't help โ€” carry a printed bank statement highlighting the debited transaction
  5. Write to the bank's nodal officer (email available on the bank's website) if the branch doesn't resolve it

Pro tip: When calling, say "UPI transaction dispute" to get routed to the right team. Note down the complaint number and the name of the agent.

Escalate to NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India)

If neither your UPI app nor bank resolves the issue within 15-30 days, file a complaint directly with NPCI:

  1. Go to NPCI Dispute Redressal
  2. Select "UPI" as the product
  3. Fill in: your bank name, UPI ID, transaction ID/UTR, amount, date
  4. Describe the issue: "Transaction failed but money debited from my account. Auto-reversal not received."
  5. Upload screenshots of the failed transaction
  6. NPCI will coordinate with both banks to resolve the dispute
  7. Expected resolution: 15-30 days

RBI Ombudsman โ€” Final Escalation

If NPCI also fails to resolve the issue within 30 days, escalate to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman:

How to File an RBI Ombudsman Complaint

  1. Go to RBI Complaint Portal (CMS)
  2. Click "File a Complaint"
  3. Select complaint category: "Mobile/Electronic Banking โ€” UPI"
  4. Enter your bank details, transaction details, and the complaint history
  5. Upload supporting documents: bank statement, screenshots, previous complaint numbers
  6. Submit โ€” you'll get a complaint tracking number

What RBI Ombudsman Can Do

  • Order the bank to refund your money immediately
  • Direct the bank to pay compensation (โ‚น100/day for delayed reversal as per RBI norms)
  • Penalize the bank for non-compliance with auto-reversal timelines

Note: You must have first complained to your bank/NPCI and waited at least 30 days before approaching the RBI Ombudsman. Keep all complaint numbers and correspondence ready.

Timeline Summary โ€” When to Do What

Day Action
Day 0 Transaction fails, money debited. Note transaction ID, UTR, take screenshots
Day 1-5 Wait for auto-reversal. Check bank statement daily
Day 5 No auto-reversal? Raise dispute in your UPI app
Day 15 App dispute unresolved? Call your bank, visit branch if needed
Day 15-30 Bank not helping? File complaint on NPCI portal
Day 30+ Still unresolved? File complaint with RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in

Important Tips

  1. Never retry a failed transaction immediately โ€” check your bank balance first. Double debit is a real risk
  2. Screenshot everything โ€” the failed transaction screen, your bank statement showing the debit, and all complaint numbers
  3. Avoid UPI during peak hours โ€” 1st/7th of the month (salary days), festival seasons, 9-11 AM, and month-end see maximum failures
  4. Check your bank statement, not just the app โ€” sometimes the refund is credited but the app still shows "Failed"
  5. Keep your phone number updated with your bank โ€” reversal SMS goes to your registered number
  6. โ‚น100/day compensation is your right โ€” if the bank delays auto-reversal beyond the prescribed timeline, RBI mandates โ‚น100/day compensation. Mention this when escalating

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. UPI payment failed but money debited โ€” will I get my money back?

Yes, absolutely. As per NPCI and RBI rules, if a UPI transaction fails but money is debited, the bank must auto-reverse the amount within 5 business days. If the auto-reversal doesn't happen, raise a dispute in your UPI app, then with your bank, and finally with NPCI/RBI Ombudsman. Your money is not lost โ€” it's sitting in a suspense account.

Q2. How long does UPI auto-reversal take?

Auto-reversal typically happens within 24-48 hours but can take up to 5 business days as per NPCI guidelines. Weekends and bank holidays don't count as business days.

Q3. UPI money deducted but not received by the receiver โ€” what should I do?

First, check the transaction status in your UPI app. If it shows "Failed," wait for auto-reversal (5 business days). If it shows "Success" but the receiver didn't get the money, the issue is at the beneficiary bank's end โ€” raise a dispute in your UPI app. See our UPI refund not received guide for that specific scenario.

Q4. Can I get compensation for delayed UPI refund?

Yes. RBI's circular on TAT (Turn Around Time) mandates that banks pay โ‚น100 per day as compensation for delays in auto-reversing failed UPI transactions beyond the prescribed timeline. You can claim this through the RBI Ombudsman if the bank doesn't voluntarily credit it.

Q5. How do I check my UPI transaction reference number (UTR)?

Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM) โ†’ go to transaction history โ†’ tap the specific transaction. The UTR or UPI Reference Number is a 12-digit number starting with digits. You can also find it in the SMS your bank sent when the money was debited.

Q6. UPI payment stuck on "Pending" โ€” should I worry?

"Pending" means the transaction is still being processed. Wait 48 hours โ€” it will either complete (money reaches receiver) or auto-reverse (money comes back to you). Do not retry the payment while it's pending to avoid double payment.

Q7. Is there a limit on UPI dispute/complaint filing?

No, there is no limit. You can raise disputes for any failed transaction. However, file the dispute within 30 days of the transaction for faster resolution. After that, the process may take longer as banks need to pull older records.

Q8. What if the merchant says they didn't receive the payment but my money is deducted?

If the transaction status shows "Failed" in your UPI app, the money will come back to you via auto-reversal. Do not pay the merchant again until you confirm the original payment actually went through. If the merchant's payment gateway shows it as received, ask the merchant to check with their payment provider. Always keep your bank statement as proof.
