  3. Fill the cancellation form
  4. Submit to the clerk
  5. Refund will be given after deducting cancellation charges

Timing: Counter tickets can be cancelled up to the time of chart preparation at the originating station's counter, or up to 3 hours after actual departure at the destination station's counter.

TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) Filing

TDR is used to claim a refund when normal cancellation is not possible. File a TDR in these situations:

  • Train cancelled by Railways
  • Train delayed by more than 3 hours
  • AC/fan not working
  • Accommodation not provided despite confirmed ticket
  • Partially waitlisted ticket after chart preparation

How to File TDR Online

  1. Log in to irctc.co.in
  2. Go to My Transactions → Booked Ticket History
  3. Select the ticket and click File TDR
  4. Select the reason for TDR
  5. Submit the request
  6. Note the TDR number for tracking

TDR Processing Time: Usually 60-90 days. Refund is credited to the original payment method.

When to File TDR

Situation Action

Waitlist Auto-Cancellation Rules

For IRCTC e-tickets:

  • If your ticket remains on waitlist (WL) after chart preparation, it is automatically cancelled
  • Full refund (minus ₹60 per passenger) is credited to your account
  • No action needed from your side
  • Refund timeline: 5-7 working days for net banking, 7-10 days for credit/debit card

For counter tickets:

  • WL counter tickets are not auto-cancelled
  • You must visit the counter to cancel and claim refund
  • If you don't cancel, you lose the full amount

Refund Timeline

Payment Method Refund Timeline
IRCTC Wallet / UPI 1-3 working days
Net Banking 5-7 working days
Debit Card 7-10 working days
Credit Card 7-14 working days

Important Tips

  1. Cancel early to avoid higher cancellation charges — cancelling 48+ hours before departure costs the least
  2. Don't forget WL counter tickets — unlike e-tickets, they are not auto-cancelled; you'll lose your money if you don't cancel
  3. Screenshot your cancellation — save the cancellation confirmation and refund reference number
  4. File TDR promptly — if your train was cancelled or delayed, file TDR within 72 hours
  5. Check PNR status before cancelling — your WL ticket might get confirmed

Yes, IRCTC allows partial cancellation. You can cancel individual passengers from the same PNR.

Q4. What happens if I don't cancel my e-ticket and don't travel?

Q5. How do I track my refund status?

Log in to IRCTC → My Transactions → Cancelled Ticket History. The refund status and amount will be shown there.

Q6. Is there a cancellation charge for RAC tickets?
