Traffic Challan Check & Pay Online: All States Guide

Got a traffic challan? You can check and pay traffic fines online through the national e-Challan portal or state-specific traffic police websites. This guide covers how to check pending challans by vehicle number or DL number, pay fines online, contest a challan, and understand the DL points system — for all Indian states.

What is an e-Challan?

An e-Challan is an electronic traffic violation ticket issued by traffic police or automated camera systems. Under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, traffic fines have been significantly increased. All challans are now linked to the national Vahan and Sarathi databases via the vehicle registration number and driving licence.

How to Contest a Traffic Challan

If you believe a challan was issued wrongly:

Step 1: Don't Pay Immediately

Once you pay, it is considered an admission of the violation.

Step 2: Gather Evidence

Collect evidence to support your case — dashcam footage, photos, witness statements, GPS records.

Step 3: File a Complaint/Appeal

  • Online: Some state portals allow filing grievances against challans
  • At RTO/Traffic Court: Visit the designated traffic court or RTO office
  • Through the e-Challan portal: Some challans have a "Dispute" option

Step 4: Appear at the Court/Hearing

Present your case with evidence before the traffic magistrate or adjudicating officer.

Step 5: Await Decision

The court will either dismiss the challan or uphold it. If upheld, you must pay the fine within the stipulated time.

Time Limit

  • You generally have 60 days to contest a challan from the date of issue
  • If not contested or paid within 60 days, additional penalties may apply

DL Points System

India is gradually implementing a DL demerit points system in some states:

  • Each traffic violation adds penalty points to your driving licence
  • Accumulating points beyond a threshold leads to DL suspension
  • Points are tracked through the Sarathi database
  • Currently active in select states; national rollout in progress
Points Accumulated Consequence
1-6 points Warning
7-12 points Mandatory refresher course
12+ points DL suspension (1-12 months)

The points system is still being standardized nationally. Check with your state RTO for current applicability.

Important Tips

  1. Check regularly — Even if you haven't been stopped by police, cameras may have captured violations. Check the e-Challan portal monthly.
  2. Pay promptly — Some states offer early payment discounts. Late payment can result in additional penalties.
  3. Clear before RC transfer — Pending challans can block RC transfer or renewal. Clear all fines before selling your vehicle.
  4. Save receipts — Always download and save payment receipts. Challans sometimes reappear due to system errors.
  5. Use the national portal — The e-Challan portal at echallan.parivahan.gov.in is the most comprehensive and covers most states.
