When Do You Need to Transfer Your Voter ID?

When you move to a new address, you need to update your voter registration so you can vote at your new location. The process depends on whether you've moved:

  • Within the same assembly constituency โ†’ Use Form 8A (address change within constituency)
  • To a different assembly constituency (same or different state) โ†’ Use Form 6 (new registration in the new constituency)

Your old registration will be automatically deleted from the previous electoral roll once the new one is processed.

Important Tips

  1. Don't register in the new place without mentioning old registration โ€” this creates duplicate entries, which is illegal under electoral law
  2. Apply as soon as you move โ€” don't wait for election season when processing may be paused
  3. Keep address proof ready at the new location โ€” rent agreement works if Aadhaar isn't updated yet
  4. Update your Aadhaar address first โ€” it makes the Voter ID transfer smoother since Aadhaar is the most accepted address proof. See our Aadhaar address update guide
  5. Verify after approval โ€” search your name on voters.eci.gov.in to confirm you're listed in the new constituency

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my EPIC number change if I move to a new constituency?

Yes, when you register via Form 6 in a new constituency, you will be issued a new EPIC number. The old number becomes invalid.

Will my old voter registration be deleted automatically?

When you provide your previous EPIC number in Form 6, the Election Commission initiates deletion of your old entry. However, it's good practice to verify after a few weeks.

Can I vote at my old address while the transfer is pending?

Until your new registration is approved and old one deleted, your name remains on the old electoral roll. Technically you can vote there, but it's best to complete the transfer before election season.

I've moved to a different state. Is the process different?

The process is the same โ€” file Form 6 at voters.eci.gov.in with your new state and constituency details. Cross-state transfers may take slightly longer (30โ€“60 days).

What if I don't know my previous EPIC number?

Search for your name on voters.eci.gov.in using the "Search in Electoral Roll" feature. You can search by name, state, and constituency to find your EPIC number.

Can I transfer my Voter ID for a temporary address?

You should register at the address where you ordinarily reside. Temporary stays (e.g., short work assignments) generally don't qualify. If you've permanently moved, proceed with the transfer.

What if I'm a student staying in a hostel in another state?

Students can register at their hostel address if it's their ordinary place of residence. The hostel allotment letter or institution's address certificate can serve as address proof.
