What is e-Aadhaar?

e-Aadhaar is the electronic/digital version of your Aadhaar card issued by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). It is a password-protected PDF document that is legally valid and equivalent to the physical Aadhaar card. You can download it anytime from the official UIDAI portal.

e-Aadhaar contains:

  • Your 12-digit Aadhaar number
  • Name, date of birth, and gender
  • Address as recorded in Aadhaar
  • Photograph and QR code for verification
  • Digital signature of UIDAI for authenticity

Important: e-Aadhaar is equally valid as the original Aadhaar card for all purposes — bank KYC, government schemes, mobile SIM purchase, and more.

Who Can Download e-Aadhaar?

  • Any Aadhaar holder with a registered mobile number linked to Aadhaar
  • Aadhaar holders who know their Enrolment ID (EID)
  • Those who have generated a Virtual ID (VID)
  • Both Indian residents and NRIs with Aadhaar

Note: If your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar, you cannot download e-Aadhaar online. Visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre to update your mobile number first. Also see our guide on updating mobile number in Aadhaar.

  4. e-Aadhaar is legally valid — no one can refuse it in place of the physical card (as per UIDAI guidelines)
  5. Generate a VID for enhanced privacy — use it instead of sharing your actual Aadhaar number

Troubleshooting Common Issues

OTP Not Received

  • Ensure your mobile number is registered with Aadhaar
  • Check if your phone has network connectivity
  • Wait at least 2-3 minutes before requesting a new OTP
  • If using a dual SIM phone, ensure the correct SIM is active

Download Fails

  • Try using a different browser (Chrome recommended)
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies
  • Disable popup blockers
  • Try during non-peak hours (early morning or late night)

Wrong Password Error

  • Use CAPITAL letters for your name
  • Use the name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar (check spelling)
  • Year of birth must be 4 digits (e.g., 1990, not 90)
