What is Bihar Mukhyamantri Cycle Yojana?

Mukhyamantri Cycle Yojana is the Bihar government scheme that provides a free bicycle (or ₹3,000 cash for purchase) to girl students enrolling in Class 9 in government schools. The scheme aims to increase girls' attendance in secondary school by solving the transportation problem — girls in rural areas often drop out because schools are far from home.

Key features:

  • Free bicycle (or ₹3,000 cash to buy one) for girls joining Class 9
  • Only for government school students
  • Automatically eligible — no separate application needed (school handles it)
  • Bihar state funded scheme covering all 38 districts

Note: A similar scheme also covers boys in some districts / for Class 9 boys in government schools. Check with your school.

Who is Eligible?

  • Must be a girl student
  • Must be newly enrolled in Class 9 in a government / government-aided school in Bihar
  • Must be a resident of Bihar
  • Attendance must be regular (school certifies attendance)

No income limit — all girl students in Class 9 at government schools are eligible.

How to Apply (or Get the Benefit)

No separate application is needed by the student. Here's how it works:

  1. You enroll in Class 9 at a government school in Bihar
  2. Your school collects the list of eligible girls (new Class 9 students)
  3. School submits the list to the District Education Office
  4. Government either:
    • Distributes bicycles at the school (through empanelled vendors), OR
    • Transfers ₹3,000 directly to the student's bank account (DBT) for the student to buy locally
  5. Student receives bicycle or ₹3,000 — typically within 3 months of the academic year start

Documents Required (School Submits on Your Behalf)

  • Aadhaar card
  • Class 8 marksheet / pass certificate (to prove passing Class 8)
  • Bank account details (for ₹3,000 DBT)
  • School enrollment form (Class 9 admission)

If you don't have a bank account, open a Jan Dhan account at any bank with your Aadhaar.

How to Check Status

  1. Ask your school's head teacher or Class 9 form teacher about the cycle yojana status for your batch
  2. Check at educationbihar.gov.in under scholarship/welfare schemes
  3. Or visit the District Education Office in your district

Frequently Asked Questions

I study in a private school. Am I eligible?

No — Mukhyamantri Cycle Yojana is only for students in government and government-aided schools.

I passed Class 9 last year and didn't get a cycle. Can I apply now?

The cycle is given at the time of Class 9 enrollment. If you missed it, contact your school immediately. Schools can submit missed cases in some states.

The school said cycle will come but it has been 8 months. What to do?

Contact the District Education Officer (DEO) of your district. Ask for the status of cycle distribution for your school's Class 9 batch.

Can I get ₹3,000 cash instead of physical bicycle?

Yes — the state often gives ₹3,000 DBT to the student's bank account so they can buy a cycle locally. The mode (physical bicycle or cash) depends on how your district is implementing it for the year. Ask your school.

I am a boy. Am I eligible?

Mukhyamantri Cycle Yojana primarily targets girls. However, some years the scheme is extended to boys in government schools as well. Check with your school and district education office.
