Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is used for:

Step-by-Step Process (Offline — At Aadhaar Centre)
Step 1: Find the Nearest Aadhaar Centre
Go to the UIDAI Bhuvan portal at https://bhuvan-app3.nrsc.gov.in/aadhaar/ and search for a centre near you. You can also search on Google Maps for "Aadhaar update centre near me."
Step 2: Visit the Centre in Person
Carry your original Aadhaar card along with a valid identity proof. Visit during working hours (usually 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Saturday).
Step 3: Fill the Aadhaar Update/Correction Form
Collect the form at the centre (free of cost). Tick "Mobile Number" as the field you want to update. Write your new mobile number clearly.
Step 4: Submit the Form
Hand over the filled form along with your Aadhaar card to the centre operator.
Step 5: Complete Biometric Authentication
Fingerprint and/or iris scan. This is mandatory — it verifies that you are the rightful Aadhaar holder.
Step 6: Provide Your New Mobile Number
Give your new active mobile number to the operator for linking. An OTP may be sent to the new number for verification at the centre.
Step 7: Pay the Fee
₹50 (inclusive of GST) at the counter. Collect the payment receipt.
Step 8: Collect the Acknowledgement Slip
Contains your Update Request Number (URN). Keep it safe — this is the only way to track your update.
Step 9: Track Your Update Status
Visit https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/ and enter your URN to check status.
What If You Lost Your Old Mobile Number?
This is one of the most common situations. Here's what to do:
- You don't need the old number — The process uses biometric authentication (fingerprint/iris), not OTP on the old number
- Simply visit the Aadhaar centre and follow the steps above with your new number
- No need to get the old SIM reissued — Biometric verification is the identity proof
- If you don't have any mobile number at all, you can still visit the centre and register a new number
Key point: Unlike many online services that require OTP on the old number, Aadhaar mobile update is done through biometrics. So even if your old number is lost, deactivated, or you never had one linked, you can update it.
Can I Change Aadhaar Mobile Number Online?
No. As of now, UIDAI does not allow mobile number updates through the online portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) or the mAadhaar app. The only way is to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre in person.
