What is Aadhaar Mobile Number Update?

Aadhaar Mobile Number Update lets you link a new mobile number to your Aadhaar card or change an existing one. This is important because many government services and banks send OTPs to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Please note — this update can only be done offline by visiting an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre in person.

Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is used for:

  • OTP verification for online Aadhaar authentication
  • e-KYC for bank accounts, mutual funds, and insurance
  • Downloading e-Aadhaar from the UIDAI portal
  • PM Kisan, LPG subsidy, and other government scheme verifications
  • PAN-Aadhaar linking OTP
  • mAadhaar app login

If your mobile number is outdated or inactive, you will be locked out of all these services.

Who is Eligible?

  • Any person who holds a valid Aadhaar card and wants to update or register a mobile number
  • You must visit the centre yourself — biometric verification (fingerprint/iris scan) is mandatory
  • No age restriction — for children under 5, a guardian with their Aadhaar can accompany them
  • Even if you never registered a mobile number with Aadhaar, you can add one using the same process

Documents Required

Identity Proof

  • Aadhaar card (original copy or just your 12-digit Aadhaar number)
  • Any valid Proof of Identity (POI) from the UIDAI-approved list:
    • Passport
    • PAN Card
    • Voter ID
    • Driving Licence

Address Proof (only if updating address too)

  • Any valid Proof of Address (POA) as per the UIDAI-approved list
  • Not required if you are only updating your mobile number

Other Requirements

  • Your new mobile number — it must be active and able to receive OTPs at the centre
  • Aadhaar Update/Correction Form — available free of cost at the centre itself

Important: You do NOT need to carry your old SIM or prove ownership of the old number. The biometric verification at the centre is sufficient to authorize the change.

Step-by-Step Process (Offline — At Aadhaar Centre)

Step 1: Find the Nearest Aadhaar Centre

Go to the UIDAI Bhuvan portal at https://bhuvan-app3.nrsc.gov.in/aadhaar/ and search for a centre near you. You can also search on Google Maps for "Aadhaar update centre near me."

Step 2: Visit the Centre in Person

Carry your original Aadhaar card along with a valid identity proof. Visit during working hours (usually 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Saturday).

Step 3: Fill the Aadhaar Update/Correction Form

Collect the form at the centre (free of cost). Tick "Mobile Number" as the field you want to update. Write your new mobile number clearly.

Step 4: Submit the Form

Hand over the filled form along with your Aadhaar card to the centre operator.

Step 5: Complete Biometric Authentication

Fingerprint and/or iris scan. This is mandatory — it verifies that you are the rightful Aadhaar holder.

Step 6: Provide Your New Mobile Number

Give your new active mobile number to the operator for linking. An OTP may be sent to the new number for verification at the centre.

Step 7: Pay the Fee

₹50 (inclusive of GST) at the counter. Collect the payment receipt.

Step 8: Collect the Acknowledgement Slip

Contains your Update Request Number (URN). Keep it safe — this is the only way to track your update.

Step 9: Track Your Update Status

Visit https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/ and enter your URN to check status.

What If You Lost Your Old Mobile Number?

This is one of the most common situations. Here's what to do:

  1. You don't need the old number — The process uses biometric authentication (fingerprint/iris), not OTP on the old number
  2. Simply visit the Aadhaar centre and follow the steps above with your new number
  3. No need to get the old SIM reissued — Biometric verification is the identity proof
  4. If you don't have any mobile number at all, you can still visit the centre and register a new number

Key point: Unlike many online services that require OTP on the old number, Aadhaar mobile update is done through biometrics. So even if your old number is lost, deactivated, or you never had one linked, you can update it.

Can I Change Aadhaar Mobile Number Online?

No. As of now, UIDAI does not allow mobile number updates through the online portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) or the mAadhaar app. The only way is to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Centre in person.

Why? Mobile number is a critical security element. To prevent fraud, UIDAI requires in-person biometric verification for this change.

Beware of scams: Any website or app claiming to update your Aadhaar mobile number online is fake. Do not share your Aadhaar details on such platforms. Report fraud to UIDAI helpline 1947.

Fees

Mode Fee
Offline (Aadhaar Centre) ₹50 (inclusive of GST)
Online Not available

The ₹50 fee applies to all demographic updates (name, address, mobile, email, DOB, gender). If you are updating multiple fields in a single visit, you still pay only ₹50 once.

Processing Time

  • Typical processing: 10-30 days
  • Maximum time: Up to 90 days in some cases
  • Most updates complete within 15 days
  • Call UIDAI helpline 1947 if your update is not reflected after 90 days

How to Track Your Aadhaar Update Status

  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  2. Click "Check Aadhaar Update Status"
  3. Enter your URN (from the acknowledgement slip) and Aadhaar number
  4. View current status — it will show "processing," "completed," or "rejected"

Alternative: Call 1947 and provide your URN to check status over the phone.

What If Biometric Authentication Fails?

Biometric failures are common, especially for elderly people or manual laborers with worn fingerprints:

  1. Fingerprint fails → The operator will try iris scan instead
  2. Both fingerprint and iris fail → The operator may try the Supervisor's biometric override (if authorized)
  3. Still failing → Visit again after a few days. Sometimes, dry/wet/injured fingers cause temporary issues
  4. Persistent failure → Contact UIDAI helpline 1947 or write to the Regional UIDAI office for assistance

Tips for smooth biometric scan:

  • Wash and dry your hands before the scan
  • Remove any henna, paint, or nail polish
  • Ensure no cuts or bandages on fingertips
  • For iris scan, remove contact lenses or glasses

Important Tips

  1. Do not fall for online scams — There is no official way to update your Aadhaar mobile number online. Any website claiming to do so is fake.
  2. Keep your new SIM active — The number must be working at the time of visit.
  3. Go early to avoid crowds — Aadhaar centres get busy after 11 AM.
  4. Keep your acknowledgement slip safe — The URN is the only way to track your update.
  5. Clean and dry fingers — For smooth biometric scan.
  6. Update mobile number BEFORE it expires — If you know your SIM is about to be deactivated, update Aadhaar mobile number proactively.
  7. After update, verify — Once the update is complete, try downloading e-Aadhaar using OTP on the new number to confirm it's working.
  8. Combine updates — If you need to update address or name too, do it in the same visit to save time and money (same ₹50 fee covers all demographic updates).
