What is a Common Service Centre (CSC)?

A Common Service Centre (CSC) — also called Jan Seva Kendra — is a government-authorized digital centre that provides over 300 government and private services to citizens, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

Run by a Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE), CSCs are the government's front-line delivery point for e-governance services in areas where citizens may not have easy internet or computer access.

There are over 5.5 lakh CSCs across India — one in almost every panchayat.

Service Charges at CSC

CSC services are not free — VLEs charge a service fee. Charges are regulated:

• Government services: ₹10–₹100 typically
• Complex services (passport, driving license): ₹100–₹500
• Banking correspondent: ₹10–₹25 per transaction

The government fixes rates for most services — excessive charging should be reported.

How to Become a CSC VLE (Operator)

If you want to open a CSC in your area:

1. Go to register.csc.gov.in
2. Apply as a Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE)
3. Eligibility: 18 years+, Class 10 pass, own computer/laptop + internet connection
4. After verification, you receive a CSC ID and access to the service portal

CSC VLEs earn commissions on each service transaction — a potential income of ₹10,000–₹30,000/month depending on location and services offered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any service be done at CSC for a fee, or are there official fixed charges?

Most services have government-fixed rates published on the CSC portal. For services like Aadhaar update, passport assistance, or PAN application, there are standard fees. Ask for a receipt — it's your proof of payment.
