What is DigiLocker?

DigiLocker is a Government of India platform (under Digital India initiative) that provides every Indian citizen a free, secure digital document wallet to store and share government-issued documents in digital format.

Documents stored in DigiLocker are issued directly by government agencies and are legally equivalent to originals — accepted by courts, traffic police, banks, and other institutions under the IT Act 2000.

How to Create a DigiLocker Account

Via App (Recommended)

1. Download DigiLocker app from Google Play or App Store
2. Click "Sign Up"
3. Enter your mobile number → OTP verification
4. Enter your Aadhaar number → OTP (to link Aadhaar)
5. Set a 6-digit PIN for your DigiLocker
6. Your account is ready

Via Website

1. Go to digilocker.gov.in
2. Click "Sign Up"
3. Follow the same steps — mobile OTP → Aadhaar OTP → set PIN

Key Documents You Can Get in DigiLocker

Availability of specific documents depends on whether the issuing authority is integrated with DigiLocker. Most major central government documents are available.

How to Download Your Driving Licence / Vehicle RC

1. Open DigiLocker app / website
2. Go to "Issued Documents" → "Search Documents"
3. Type "Driving Licence" or "Vehicle Registration"
4. Select the issuing authority (your state — e.g., "Transport Dept, Maharashtra")
5. Enter your DL number or vehicle registration number
6. Your document appears in DigiLocker — it is now digitally issued and legally valid

Can I Use DigiLocker Documents for Traffic Police?

Yes — DigiLocker documents are legally accepted by traffic police under Rule 139A of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, as amended in 2020. Show the DigiLocker-stored RC and DL on your phone if asked.

Note: Traffic police apps (like mParivahan, DigiLocker) are also accepted for documents.

How to Share Documents from DigiLocker

1. Open the document in DigiLocker
2. Click "Share"
3. Choose:
   • Share via link (send a link that expires in a set time)
   • Download PDF (with QR code for verification)
   • Push to email
4. The recipient can verify the document's authenticity by scanning the QR code

Documents You Can Upload to DigiLocker (Self-Upload)

Beyond government-issued documents, you can also upload your own scanned documents (caste certificates, property papers, etc.) in DigiLocker for personal storage (not government-verified — marked as "Uploaded by user").

CBSE integrates directly with DigiLocker:

2. Enter your roll number and year of passing
3. Class 10/12 marksheets and certificates appear instantly
4. These are digitally signed by CBSE — accepted everywhere

Most state boards (Maharashtra, UP, TN, Karnataka, etc.) are also integrated.

Is DigiLocker mandatory?

No — it is voluntary. However, it makes life significantly easier for document sharing (job applications, banking, vehicle checks, etc.)

My state DL is not showing in DigiLocker. Why?

Not all state transport authorities are integrated yet. Check if your state's transport department is listed. Alternatively, download from mParivahan app.

Can I use DigiLocker documents for passport application?

Yes — DigiLocker documents (Aadhaar, birth certificate, educational certificates) are accepted for Passport Seva Kendra appointments.

Is there an age restriction for DigiLocker?

Anyone with an Aadhaar card (including minors with parents' assistance) can use DigiLocker.

What if I lose my phone? Is my data safe?

DigiLocker doesn't store documents on your phone — it fetches them from government databases. As long as your Aadhaar + mobile OTP is secure, your documents are safe. Install DigiLocker on a new phone and log in.

Can I add a nominee or family member's documents?

DigiLocker is individual — each person has their own account linked to their Aadhaar. You cannot store another person's government-issued documents in your account.
