Wrong E-Challan? How to Check, Dispute & Fix Traffic Challan Issues Online

Received a traffic e-challan for a violation you didn't commit? Challan issued against the wrong vehicle number? Payment done but challan still showing as pending? This guide covers every common e-challan problem and how to fix it.

For the basic process of checking and paying challans, see our e-Challan payment guide. This page focuses on fixing problems โ€” wrong challans, failed payments, and disputes.

How to Check E-Challan Status Online (Quick Recap)

Before disputing, first verify the challan details:

  1. Visit echallan.parivahan.gov.in
  2. Click "Check Challan Status"
  3. Enter your Vehicle Number (format: DL01AB1234) or Challan Number
  4. Enter the Captcha and click "Get Details"
  5. Note down the challan number, date, violation type, location, and issuing authority

Tip: Camera-based challans take 24โ€“72 hours to appear. If you just received an SMS, wait a day before checking.

You can also check via the mParivahan app (available on Android and iOS) by adding your vehicle using the RC number.

Problem 1: Wrong Challan Received โ€” Violation You Didn't Commit

This is the most common issue. You receive a challan for jumping a red light, overspeeding, or no helmet โ€” but you weren't there or didn't commit the violation.

Why This Happens

  • CCTV/camera error โ€” camera misread your number plate
  • Duplicate number plate โ€” someone else is using your vehicle number (cloned plates)
  • Vehicle was sold but RC was not transferred โ€” the new owner's violations come to you
  • GPS/location error in the issuing device

How to Dispute

Step 1: Gather Evidence

Collect proof that you weren't at the violation location:

  • Google Maps Timeline โ€” shows where your phone was at that date/time
  • Toll/FASTag records โ€” prove your vehicle was elsewhere (check via ihmcl.com or your bank's FASTag portal)
  • Office attendance records or CCTV footage from your location
  • Dashcam footage if available
  • Photos of your vehicle โ€” if the challan photo shows a different vehicle with your number

Step 2: Contest via Virtual Court (Online)

  1. Visit vcourts.gov.in
  2. Search using your Challan Number or CNR Number (from the SMS)
  3. Select your case
  4. Choose "Not Guilty / Contest"
  5. Upload your evidence documents
  6. A virtual hearing date will be assigned
  7. Attend the hearing online or in person as directed

Step 3: File a Grievance on the E-Challan Portal

  1. Visit echallan.parivahan.gov.in
  2. Look for the "Grievance" or "Complaint" section
  3. Enter your challan number and vehicle details
  4. Describe the issue clearly โ€” mention date, time, and why the challan is wrong
  5. Upload supporting documents (photos, proof of location)
  6. Note the grievance/ticket number for tracking

Step 4: Approach Traffic Police Offline

If online options don't work:

  1. Visit the traffic police station mentioned on the challan as the issuing authority
  2. Carry a printed copy of the challan, your RC, driving licence, and evidence
  3. File a written complaint โ€” get an acknowledgement copy
  4. Ask for the CCTV footage of the violation โ€” you have the right to see it

Problem 2: Challan for Wrong Vehicle Number

You received a challan, but the photo clearly shows a different vehicle with a similar or identical number plate.

What to Do

  1. Take a screenshot of the challan details and violation photo from the portal
  2. Take clear photos of your vehicle showing your actual number plate
  3. File an FIR at your local police station if you suspect someone is using a cloned/duplicate number plate
  4. Contest the challan via Virtual Court (steps above) with the FIR copy and vehicle photos as evidence
  5. Report to RTO โ€” inform your Regional Transport Office about the duplicate plate so they can investigate

Important: If this happens repeatedly, someone may be using a duplicate of your number plate. File an FIR immediately and inform the RTO. You can also apply for a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) to reduce cloning risk.

Problem 3: Payment Failed but Challan Still Shows Pending

You tried to pay the challan online, money was debited from your account, but the portal still shows the challan as "Pending" or "Unpaid."

Immediate Steps

  1. Wait 24โ€“48 hours โ€” payment status updates are not instant. Most transactions reflect within 24โ€“48 hours.
  2. Check your bank statement โ€” confirm if the amount was actually debited
  3. Check for refund โ€” failed transactions are usually auto-refunded within 5โ€“7 business days

If Money Was Debited but Challan Still Pending After 48 Hours

  1. Save proof โ€” take screenshots of:
    • Bank statement showing debit
    • Transaction reference number / UTR number
    • Challan page showing "Pending" status
  2. Contact the payment gateway โ€” if you paid via a UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, etc.), raise a dispute in that app
  3. Email the e-Challan helpdesk:
    • Email: echallan-morth@gov.in (MoRTH helpdesk)
    • Include: challan number, vehicle number, transaction reference, bank statement screenshot
  4. File a grievance on pgportal.gov.in (Centralized Public Grievance portal) if no response within 7 days

Warning: Do NOT pay again until the first payment is resolved. You may end up paying double. Wait for the refund or status update.

Problem 4: Challan Not Reflecting After Payment (Paid but Still Showing)

You successfully paid the challan, received a payment confirmation, but the portal still shows it as unpaid or pending.

How to Fix

  1. Wait 48 hours โ€” the system takes time to reconcile payments, especially for Virtual Court payments
  2. Check on the right portal:
    • If you paid on echallan.parivahan.gov.in โ€” check status there
    • If you paid on vcourts.gov.in โ€” check there (they are separate systems)
    • Payment on one portal may not immediately reflect on the other
  3. Keep your payment receipt โ€” the receipt with transaction number is your proof of payment
  4. Contact helpdesk with:
    • Payment receipt / transaction ID
    • Challan number
    • Date and mode of payment
  5. Visit the traffic police station (issuing authority) with your receipt as a last resort โ€” they can manually update the status

If You Paid at a CSC (Common Service Centre) or Bank

  • Get a stamped receipt from the CSC/bank
  • If the status doesn't update in 7 days, take the receipt to the issuing traffic police station

Problem 5: Vehicle Sold but Challans Coming to You

If you sold your vehicle but didn't complete the RC transfer, all e-challans will continue to be issued in your name.

How to Fix

  1. Complete the RC transfer immediately โ€” see our Vehicle RC Transfer guide
  2. For existing challans: Contact the traffic police with:
    • Sale deed / sale agreement
    • Delivery note with buyer's details
    • Form 29 and Form 30 (transfer forms) if filed
  3. If the buyer is uncooperative, file an application with the RTO to cancel the RC in your name
  4. Dispute current challans via Virtual Court with sale documents as proof

Virtual Courts handle traffic challan disputes online. Here are the key links:

State/City Virtual Court Link
All India (Central) vcourts.gov.in
Delhi vcourts.gov.in
Karnataka (Bengaluru) vcourts.gov.in
Tamil Nadu (Chennai) vcourts.gov.in
Maharashtra vcourts.gov.in
Uttar Pradesh vcourts.gov.in
Rajasthan vcourts.gov.in
Telangana vcourts.gov.in
Gujarat vcourts.gov.in

Note: Virtual Courts are operational in select cities and being expanded. If your challan doesn't appear on vcourts.gov.in, it may not have been forwarded to Virtual Court yet โ€” check on echallan.parivahan.gov.in instead.

How to Dispute a Challan Offline (Traffic Court)

If online dispute doesn't work or Virtual Court isn't available in your area:

Step-by-Step

  1. Identify the issuing authority โ€” check the challan for the traffic police station name
  2. Visit the traffic police station during working hours (usually 10 AM โ€“ 5 PM, Monday to Saturday)
  3. Carry these documents:
    • Printed challan copy (from the portal)
    • Driving licence (original + photocopy)
    • Vehicle RC (original + photocopy)
    • Insurance copy
    • Evidence supporting your dispute (photos, location proof, FASTag records)
    • FIR copy (if duplicate number plate issue)
  4. File a written complaint โ€” address it to the Traffic Inspector or ACP Traffic
  5. Get an acknowledgement with date and reference number
  6. Follow up after 7โ€“15 days if you don't hear back
  7. If the traffic police reject your dispute, you can approach the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) or file a case in the local court

Important Tips

  1. Check challans regularly โ€” search your vehicle number every 2โ€“3 months on the portal. Camera challans don't always send SMS notifications.
  2. Never ignore a challan โ€” unpaid challans can lead to RC suspension, licence suspension, or court warrants.
  3. Don't pay a wrong challan just to "get rid of it" โ€” paying means admitting guilt. Dispute it properly if it's wrong.
  4. Save all receipts โ€” payment receipts, grievance numbers, and complaint acknowledgements are your proof.
  5. Complete RC transfer when selling โ€” this is the #1 cause of "wrong" challans. See our RC transfer guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check e-challan status by vehicle number?

Visit echallan.parivahan.gov.in, enter your vehicle number (e.g., DL01AB1234), enter the captcha, and click "Get Details." You'll see all pending and paid challans for that vehicle.

I received a wrong e-challan. Can I dispute it online?

Yes. You can contest the challan through vcourts.gov.in by selecting "Not Guilty / Contest" and uploading evidence. You can also file a grievance on the e-Challan portal or approach the traffic police station directly.

What if the challan photo shows a different vehicle with my number?

This means someone may be using a duplicate/cloned number plate. File an FIR at your local police station, inform your RTO, and contest the challan via Virtual Court with the FIR copy and photos of your actual vehicle.

My e-challan payment is not reflecting. What should I do?

Wait 24โ€“48 hours for the payment to reflect. If it still shows pending, contact the e-Challan helpdesk at echallan-morth@gov.in with your transaction reference number and bank statement. Do not pay again until the issue is resolved.

Can I get a refund for a wrongly paid challan?

If you paid a challan that was issued wrongly and later disputed successfully, you may be eligible for a refund. However, the refund process is handled by the traffic authority and can take several weeks. Contact the issuing traffic police station with your payment receipt and dispute resolution order.

What happens if I don't pay an e-challan?

The fine amount may increase with late fees. The challan may be forwarded to Virtual Court, your RC renewal may be blocked, your driving licence may be suspended, and in extreme cases, a court warrant may be issued.

How long do I have to dispute a challan?

There's no strict deadline for disputing, but it's best to act within 30 days of receiving the challan. Once it's forwarded to Virtual Court, you'll have a specific hearing date to respond.
