What is EPFO and EPF?

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) manages the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) โ€” a mandatory retirement savings scheme for employees in India working in establishments with 20+ employees. Every month, 12% of your basic salary + DA is deducted and deposited into your EPF account, and your employer contributes another 12% (8.33% goes to EPS โ€” Employee Pension Scheme; 3.67% to EPF).

At any point, this accumulated balance + interest (currently 8.25% per annum) is your PF savings. You can withdraw it partially or fully depending on your situation.

Tax on PF Withdrawal

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to receive PF money after claim submission?

Online claims are typically settled in 3โ€“7 working days from submission. The amount is directly credited to your linked bank account.

Can I withdraw PF while still employed?

You cannot make a full withdrawal while employed. You can claim a PF advance (Form 31) for specific purposes like medical emergency, marriage, education, or home loan repayment.

My employer is not depositing PF deducted from salary. What to do?

You can file a complaint at the EPFO grievance portal (epfigms.gov.in) or visit your local EPFO regional office. EPFO can take action against non-compliant employers.

How to update mobile number in EPFO?

Through your employer's digital signature certificate (DSC) โ€” ask HR to update it. Or visit the EPFO office with Aadhaar and request mobile number update.
