Google Pay UPI PIN Forgot โ How to Reset Your PIN
Your UPI PIN is the password you enter to authorize every UPI payment on Google Pay. If you have forgotten it or entered the wrong PIN too many times, you cannot make any transactions. The good news is that resetting your UPI PIN is simple โ you just need your debit card details.
What You Need to Reset Your UPI PIN
Before starting, keep these ready:
- Debit card linked to the bank account on Google Pay
- Debit card number โ the 16-digit number on the front of your card
- Expiry date โ month and year printed on the card
- CVV โ the 3-digit number on the back of your card
- Registered mobile number โ the number linked to your bank account (you will receive an OTP)
Note: You cannot reset your UPI PIN without a debit card. If you do not have a debit card, visit your bank branch to get one issued, or ask your bank if they support UPI PIN reset without a card.
Step-by-Step: Reset UPI PIN on Google Pay
Step 1: Open Google Pay and Go to Bank Account
- Open the Google Pay app on your phone
- Tap your profile icon (top right corner)
- Tap "Bank account"
- Select the bank account for which you want to reset the PIN
Step 2: Select "Forgot UPI PIN"
- On the bank account details page, tap "Forgot UPI PIN"
- If you do not see this option, look for "Reset UPI PIN" or "Change UPI PIN"
- Google Pay will ask you to verify your identity using your debit card
Step 3: Enter Debit Card Details
- Enter the last 6 digits of your debit card number
- Enter the expiry date (MM/YY) of your debit card
- Some banks also require the CVV (3-digit code on the back)
- Tap "Proceed" or the arrow button
Step 4: Verify with OTP
- An OTP will be sent to your bank-registered mobile number via SMS
- Google Pay usually reads the OTP automatically
- If it does not auto-read, enter the OTP manually
- The OTP is valid for a limited time (usually 3-10 minutes)
Step 5: Set Your New UPI PIN
- Enter your new UPI PIN โ choose a 4-digit or 6-digit PIN depending on your bank
- Re-enter the PIN to confirm
- Tap "Submit" or the checkmark
- You will see a confirmation message: "UPI PIN set successfully"
- Your new UPI PIN is now active โ use it for your next transaction
UPI PIN vs ATM PIN โ Know the Difference
| Feature | UPI PIN | ATM PIN |
|---|---|---|
| Used for | UPI payments (Google Pay, PhonePe, etc.) | ATM withdrawals and POS transactions |
| Digits | 4 or 6 digits (bank-dependent) | 4 digits |
| Set via | UPI app using debit card | ATM machine or net banking |
| Can be same? | Yes, but not recommended for security |
Common Issues During UPI PIN Reset
"Invalid card details" error
- Double-check the last 6 digits of your card number
- Ensure the expiry date format is correct (MM/YY)
- The debit card must belong to the same bank account linked in Google Pay
- If your card has expired, get a new card from your bank first
OTP not received
- Wait 2-3 minutes โ network delays are common
- Check if your registered mobile number is active and has network signal
- Look in your SMS spam or blocked folder
- If using a dual-SIM phone, check both SIMs
- Try again after 15 minutes if the first OTP did not arrive
"UPI PIN is blocked" after wrong attempts
- If you entered the wrong UPI PIN 3 or more times, it gets temporarily blocked
- Wait 24 hours for the block to be automatically lifted
- After 24 hours, use the "Forgot UPI PIN" flow to set a new PIN
- If the block is not lifted, contact your bank
Debit card not available
- If you do not have a physical debit card, check if your bank offers a virtual debit card via net banking
- Some banks issue instant digital debit cards โ log into your bank's app to check
- Visit your bank branch to request a new debit card (takes 7-10 working days to arrive)
- Without a debit card, you cannot reset UPI PIN through any UPI app
How to Change UPI PIN (If You Know Your Current PIN)
If you remember your current PIN but want to change it:
- Open Google Pay โ Profile โ Bank account
- Select the bank account
- Tap "Change UPI PIN"
- Enter your current UPI PIN
- Enter your new UPI PIN and confirm
- PIN changed successfully โ no debit card or OTP needed for this process
Tips for Choosing a Secure UPI PIN
- Do not use obvious numbers like 1234, 0000, or your birth year
- Do not use the same PIN as your ATM PIN or phone lock
- Avoid using parts of your phone number or Aadhaar number
- Choose a PIN you can remember but others cannot guess
- Never share your UPI PIN with anyone โ no bank or app will ever ask for it
FAQs
Q: Can I reset my Google Pay UPI PIN without a debit card? A: No. A debit card is mandatory for resetting UPI PIN on any UPI app. If you do not have one, visit your bank branch to get a debit card issued.
Q: I entered the wrong UPI PIN 3 times. Is my account blocked? A: Your UPI PIN gets temporarily blocked after multiple wrong attempts. Wait 24 hours and then reset your PIN using the "Forgot UPI PIN" option. Your bank account and money are safe.
Q: My debit card has expired. Can I still reset my UPI PIN? A: No. You need an active, valid debit card. Request a new debit card from your bank. Once you receive it, use the new card details to reset your UPI PIN.
Q: Is UPI PIN the same for all UPI apps? A: Yes. Your UPI PIN is set at the bank level, not the app level. If you reset your PIN on Google Pay, the same new PIN works on PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and all other UPI apps linked to that bank account.
Q: Can someone make a UPI payment without my UPI PIN? A: No. Every UPI transaction requires the UPI PIN for authorization. Without the PIN, no one can send money from your account. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone.
Q: How many digits should my UPI PIN be? A: Most banks use a 4-digit UPI PIN. Some banks (like SBI and a few others) support 6-digit UPI PINs. The app will prompt you based on your bank's requirement.
