What is GST Registration?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax that replaced multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. GST registration gives you a unique 15-digit GSTIN (GST Identification Number) that allows you to collect tax from customers, claim input tax credit, and file GST returns.

GST registration is done online through the official GST portal at gst.gov.in and is completely free of cost. The process typically takes 3-7 working days after submission.

Who Needs GST Registration?

GST registration is mandatory if:

  • Your annual turnover exceeds โ‚น40 lakh (โ‚น20 lakh for special category states)
  • For service providers, the threshold is โ‚น20 lakh (โ‚น10 lakh for special category states)
  • You make inter-state supply of goods or services (no threshold โ€” registration mandatory from day one)
  • You sell on e-commerce platforms (Amazon, Flipkart, etc.)
  • You are an e-commerce operator
  • You are a casual taxable person or non-resident taxable person
  • You are required to deduct TDS under GST
  • You are an input service distributor
  • You supply goods/services through an agent or broker

Special Category States: Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, and Uttarakhand have lower thresholds.
