ICICI Account Dormant? How to Reactivate Inactive Account

If your ICICI Bank savings or current account has become dormant (inactive), you won't be able to make transactions, receive credits, or use net banking/UPI until it's reactivated. Here's everything you need to know about why accounts go dormant and how to reactivate yours.

What is a Dormant Account?

As per RBI guidelines, a bank account is classified as:

Status Condition
Active At least one customer-initiated transaction in the last 12 months
Inactive No customer-initiated transaction for 12 consecutive months
Dormant No customer-initiated transaction for 24 consecutive months

Customer-initiated transactions include cash deposits/withdrawals, fund transfers, cheque transactions, UPI, NEFT, RTGS, and online purchases. Auto-debits (like SIP, EMI, standing instructions) and interest credits do NOT count as customer-initiated transactions.

What Happens When Your ICICI Account Becomes Dormant?

  1. Transactions blocked โ€” You cannot withdraw, transfer, or make payments.
  2. Credits may be held โ€” Incoming NEFT/RTGS/UPI credits to a dormant account may be rejected or held.
  3. Net banking/UPI disabled โ€” Net banking and UPI access is blocked.
  4. Debit card blocked โ€” Your ATM/debit card won't work for transactions.
  5. Interest continues โ€” Your savings account balance continues to earn interest even when dormant.
  6. No penalty โ€” ICICI Bank does not charge a penalty for dormancy. However, minimum balance charges may still apply.

How to Reactivate a Dormant ICICI Account

Method 1: Visit ICICI Branch (Most Reliable)

This is the most reliable method and works for all dormant accounts.

Steps:

  1. Visit your home branch โ€” Go to the ICICI Bank branch where your account was opened. You can also visit any ICICI branch, but your home branch will process it fastest.
  2. Carry these documents:
    • Original PAN card
    • Original Aadhaar card (or any valid address proof)
    • Passport-size photograph (1-2 copies)
    • Your account number or old passbook/cheque book
  3. Fill the reactivation form โ€” The branch will provide an "Account Reactivation" or "Dormant Account Activation" form. Fill in your details and sign it.
  4. KYC verification โ€” The bank will verify your identity documents. If your KYC is outdated (older than 2 years), you'll need to complete a fresh KYC update simultaneously.
  5. Make a small transaction โ€” The branch may ask you to make a token deposit (even โ‚น100-500) to activate the account.
  6. Processing time โ€” Reactivation typically takes 24-48 hours after form submission. In some cases, it may take up to 3-5 working days.

Method 2: Request via Customer Care

  1. Call 1800 1080 (toll-free) or 022-33667777.
  2. Provide your account number, registered mobile number, and verify identity.
  3. Request dormant account reactivation.
  4. The executive may initiate the process remotely, but you'll likely still need to visit the branch for KYC verification and document submission.

Method 3: Online Options (Limited)

Currently, ICICI Bank does not offer fully online dormant account reactivation. However:

  • Video KYC โ€” Some branches may offer video KYC for re-verification. Ask when you call customer care.
  • iMobile Pay โ€” If your iMobile Pay is still active (unlikely for long-dormant accounts), you may be able to initiate a reactivation request.
  • Email request โ€” Send an email to customer.care@icicibank.com with your account number and request. The bank will guide you on next steps.

Note: For accounts dormant for more than 2 years, a branch visit is almost always required.

KYC Update During Reactivation

If your KYC records are outdated, ICICI Bank will require a fresh KYC update before reactivating your account. This is an RBI mandate.

Documents for KYC Update:

  • Identity proof: PAN card (mandatory), Aadhaar card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving Licence
  • Address proof: Aadhaar card, Passport, Utility bill (less than 3 months old), or Bank statement from another bank
  • Photograph: Recent passport-size photo

The KYC update and reactivation are processed simultaneously โ€” you don't need separate visits.

Minimum Balance and Charges

Account Type Minimum Average Balance (MAB)
Regular Savings โ‚น10,000 (metro/urban) / โ‚น5,000 (semi-urban/rural)
Advantage Savings โ‚น25,000
Mine Account (18-35 yrs) โ‚น2,500
Basic Savings (BSBD) No minimum balance
Salary Account No minimum balance (while employer mandate is active)

Important: Minimum balance charges may have been debited during the inactive period, reducing your balance. Check your account statement after reactivation.

How to Prevent Your Account from Going Dormant

  1. Make at least one transaction every 6 months โ€” A simple ATM withdrawal, fund transfer, or UPI payment counts.
  2. Set up a recurring transfer โ€” Create a small monthly transfer (even โ‚น1) to or from the account.
  3. Use UPI โ€” Link the account to UPI and make occasional small payments.
  4. Keep mobile number updated โ€” Ensure your registered mobile number is active so you receive alerts.

Unclaimed Deposits (DEAF)

If an account remains dormant for 10+ years, the balance is transferred to the Depositor Education and Awareness Fund (DEAF) maintained by RBI. You can still claim this money:

  1. Visit your ICICI branch with KYC documents.
  2. The bank will apply to RBI for the fund transfer back.
  3. Processing takes 30-45 days after the claim is filed.
  4. Your full balance plus accrued interest will be returned.

When to Contact ICICI Bank

  • Account reactivation not processed after 5 working days
  • Unable to locate your old account details
  • Unclaimed deposit claim (account dormant 10+ years)
  • Minimum balance charges debited unfairly during dormancy

Important Tips

  1. Even a โ‚น1 UPI transaction every few months keeps your account active.
  2. Dormancy doesn't mean your money is lost โ€” your balance and interest are preserved.
  3. Keep your KYC documents updated proactively to avoid delays during reactivation.
  4. If you have multiple bank accounts, consider closing ones you don't use rather than letting them go dormant.
  5. Check the RBI UDGAM portal to search for any unclaimed deposits in your name across all banks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Does ICICI charge a fee for dormant account reactivation?

No. ICICI Bank does not charge any fee for reactivating a dormant account. However, pending minimum balance charges (if applicable) will remain.

Q2. Can I reactivate my ICICI account from another city?

Yes. You can visit any ICICI Bank branch across India for reactivation, not just your home branch. However, the home branch may process it faster.

Q3. Will my old debit card work after reactivation?

If your debit card has not expired, it will be reactivated along with the account. If expired, you'll need to request a new one (โ‚น200-500 fee may apply depending on card type).

Q4. Can someone else reactivate my account on my behalf?

No. Account reactivation requires in-person KYC verification. The account holder must visit the branch personally. For exceptional cases (medical, NRI), contact customer care for alternatives.

Q5. My salary account became dormant after I left the company. Can I still reactivate it?

Yes. Your salary account can be converted to a regular savings account and reactivated. Visit the branch with your KYC documents. Note that minimum balance requirements will change from zero (salary) to the regular savings threshold.

Q6. I don't remember my ICICI account number. How do I find it?

Check old passbooks, cheque books, emails from ICICI Bank, or your old bank statements. You can also call 1800 1080 and verify your identity to retrieve your account number.

Q7. Does a dormant account affect my CIBIL score?

No. Account dormancy does not directly affect your credit score. However, if minimum balance charges result in a negative balance and it remains unpaid, it could theoretically be reported.
