What is JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced (Joint Entrance Examination Advanced) is a national-level entrance exam conducted for admission to 23 IITs and other premier institutes like IISc Bangalore, IISER, and IIST. It is organised by one of the seven zonal IITs on a rotational basis.

Eligibility for JEE Advanced

To appear for JEE Advanced, you must satisfy all of the following criteria:

1. JEE Main Qualification

You must be among the top 2,50,000 candidates (across all categories) in JEE Main 2026.

2. Age Limit

• Candidates should have been born on or after 1st October 2001 (general category)
• 5-year relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates

3. Number of Attempts

• A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times in two consecutive years
• You must have first appeared for Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026

4. Class 12 Qualification

• Must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
• Must meet the minimum marks requirement set by the respective IIT (typically 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile)

5. No Prior Admission to IIT

• Candidates who have previously accepted a seat at any IIT are not eligible (with some exceptions for seat upgrade)

JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced consists of two papers, both compulsory:

Marking Scheme

• Single correct MCQs: +3 for correct, −1 for wrong
• Multiple correct MCQs: Partial marking applies — +4 for all correct, partial credit for partially correct, −2 for wrong
• Integer/Numerical type: +4 for correct, 0 for wrong (no negative marking)

Total marks are typically around 360 (180 per paper), but this can change.

How to Apply for JEE Advanced

Step 1: Qualify JEE Main 2026 and be in the top 2,50,000 rank list.

Step 2: Register on the JEE Advanced official portal during the registration window (usually in April–May).

Step 3: Fill in personal, academic and category details.

Step 4: Upload required documents — photograph, signature, category certificate (if applicable).

Step 5: Pay the application fee online.

• General/OBC: ₹2,800 (approx.)
• SC/ST/PwD: ₹1,400 (approx.)
• Female candidates (all categories): ₹1,400 (approx.)

Step 6: Download your admit card from the portal before the exam date.

Preparation Strategy for JEE Advanced

1. Master NCERT First

Start with NCERT textbooks for Class 11 and 12. They form the foundation, especially for Chemistry.

IIT Counselling — JoSAA Process

After JEE Advanced results, seat allocation to IITs happens through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority).

How JoSAA Works:

1. Registration: Register on josaa.nic.in after results
2. Choice filling: Select your preferred IIT + branch combinations (you can fill up to hundreds of choices)
3. Seat allocation: JoSAA runs multiple rounds (usually 5–6) of seat allotment based on rank, category and preferences
4. Accept/Freeze/Float:
   • Accept: Take the seat, done
   • Float: Accept current seat but stay in the system for upgrades in later rounds
   • Freeze: Accept current seat and exit the process
5. Document verification: Report to the allotted institute with original documents
6. Fee payment: Pay the seat acceptance fee to confirm admission

• 23 IITs
• 32 NITs
• IISERs, IIST and other GFTIs

Tip: Fill as many choices as possible. Use the "Float" option wisely to get a better branch in later rounds.

Important Tips for JEE Advanced

1. Start early — Begin serious preparation from Class 11 itself. JEE Advanced covers Class 11 topics heavily.

2. Don't ignore any subject — All three subjects carry equal weight. A weak subject can pull your rank down significantly.

3. Practise numerical/integer-type questions — These carry no negative marking and can boost your score.

4. Join a test series — Platforms like Allen, FIITJEE, and Vedantu offer excellent mock test series that simulate the actual exam.

5. Stay healthy — Maintain a proper sleep schedule, exercise regularly, and eat well. Burnout is real.

6. Read questions carefully — JEE Advanced is known for tricky wording. Misreading a question can cost precious marks.
