Kerala Free KSRTC Bus Travel for Women — UDF Government Scheme

The Kerala United Democratic Front (UDF) government, which won the 2026 assembly elections with a historic 102-seat mandate, has launched free travel for all women in KSRTC buses across Kerala as one of its flagship welfare announcements.

Under this scheme, any woman can board a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus without purchasing a ticket, making public transport fully accessible to women at zero cost.

What the Scheme Provides

  • Free travel on all KSRTC ordinary bus services across Kerala
  • Applicable to all women — no income limit or caste restriction
  • No monthly pass or registration required — simply board the bus

Which Services Are Covered

Service Type Covered?
KSRTC Ordinary buses (inter-city, inter-district) āœ… Yes
KSRTC City services (urban routes) āœ… Yes
KSRTC Fast Passenger services Subject to notification
KSRTC Super Fast / AC services Likely not covered (check keralartc.com)
Private buses āŒ Not covered
Auto-rickshaws / taxis āŒ Not covered

Note: The exact list of services and any exceptions will be published in the official KSRTC order at keralartc.com. AC and super-fast express services may require ticket purchase.

How to Use the Scheme

  1. Board any eligible KSRTC bus
  2. Inform the conductor you are availing the women's free travel scheme
  3. No ticket needed — the conductor notes the boarding

No registration, no app, no pass required for ordinary services.

Documents (if required by conductor)

While the scheme is intended to be no-document, in practice conductors may ask for basic identity verification, especially on long-distance routes. Carry any one of:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Voter ID
  • Driving licence

Why This Matters

Kerala women's mobility has traditionally been impacted by transport costs, particularly for daily commuters, domestic workers, college students, and women travelling for healthcare. Making KSRTC travel free removes a significant daily financial burden.

Comparison with similar schemes in other states:

  • Interest-free ₹5 lakh business loan for youth (men and women)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can college girls use this for daily travel to college? A: Yes. The scheme covers all women and there is no restriction on frequency or purpose of travel.

Q: Is there a pass or card to be issued? A: No — unlike some states where a physical pass is issued, Kerala's scheme is designed to be seamless. Simply board and inform the conductor.

Q: What if a conductor refuses to allow free travel? A: Note the bus number, route, and time. Report to KSRTC complaint line or call the Transport Department helpline. The scheme is a government mandate and conductors are required to comply.

Q: Does this apply to KSRTC buses in Thiruvananthapuram city as well? A: Yes. City services within Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, and other cities operated by KSRTC are covered.
