What is Kisan Suryoday Yojana?

Kisan Suryoday Yojana is Gujarat government's flagship scheme to provide 3-phase electricity to farmers from 5 AM to 9 PM โ€” during daylight hours โ€” for agricultural use. Before this scheme, farmers in many villages received power only at night (2โ€“3 AM) for irrigation, making it difficult and unsafe to operate pumps.

The scheme involved massive infrastructure investment โ€” new 220 KV substations, transmission lines, and dedicated agriculture feeders โ€” to enable daytime 3-phase supply specifically for farming.

Key Benefits for Farmers

Feature Details
Power supply hours 5 AM to 9 PM (16 hours per day)
Power type 3-phase (suitable for irrigation pumps)
Coverage 4,100+ villages in Gujarat
Farmer benefit Irrigate during safe daylight hours
No extra charge Normal agriculture tariff applies

Why This Matters

Before Kisan Suryoday Yojana:

  • Farmers received 3-phase power only at 2โ€“3 AM or irregular night hours
  • Safety hazard โ€” operating motors and pumps in complete darkness
  • Farmers had to sleep in fields waiting for power
  • Wives and children managed day work while men stayed at farms at night

After Kisan Suryoday Yojana:

  • Farmers operate pumps during daytime safely
  • Better sleep and family life
  • Children can attend school (no parent in field at night)
  • Reduced electric accidents

Coverage

The scheme was rolled out in phases:

  • Phase 1 (2020): 3 districts โ€” Dahod, Patan, Mahisagar
  • Phase 2 (2021): 12 more districts
  • Phase 3 (2022โ€“23): Remaining districts in Gujarat

By 2023, nearly all rural areas of Gujarat with pending 3-phase agriculture feeders were covered.

How to Check if Your Village is Covered

  1. Visit ugvcl.com (if in UGVCL area) or your distribution company's website (PGVCL, MGVCL, DGVCL)
  2. Look for "Kisan Suryoday Village List" under Agriculture section
  3. Enter your village name or feeder number
  4. View the current power supply schedule

Alternatively, call your local Electricity Sub-Division Office.

What Farmers Need to Do

If your village is covered under Kisan Suryoday Yojana:

  • No application required โ€” the electricity schedule changes automatically for covered villages
  • Ensure your meter and pump are in working condition
  • Report any 3-phase fault (single phasing, low voltage) to the sub-division office or via the electricity company's helpline

Frequently Asked Questions

1. My village was covered under Kisan Suryoday but we still get power only at night. What do I do?

Contact your local electricity sub-division office (Junior Engineer / SDO) and report. Also note the date and time of power supply and report to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) helpline if the issue persists.

2. I don't have an electric pump โ€” I use diesel. Does this scheme help me?

If you switch to an electric motor and your village is covered, you will benefit from the daytime power. The cost of running an electric motor is significantly lower than diesel. Consider switching โ€” check with the electricity office for a new agricultural connection.

3. Can I use 3-phase power for processing agricultural products (oil expeller, thresher)?

3-phase power can run these machines. Ensure your electricity connection is approved for the load. Industrial load on a domestic/agriculture connection is not permitted โ€” you may need a separate commercial connection.

4. Is there any subsidy on electricity tariff for farmers under this scheme?

The electricity tariff for agricultural pumps in Gujarat is already heavily subsidized (flat rate per HP per year). Kisan Suryoday is about timing the power (daytime vs nighttime) โ€” tariff remains the standard agriculture rate.

5. What if there is a load shedding on the agriculture feeder?

Load shedding on the agriculture feeder is separate from the Kisan Suryoday schedule. Report sustained load shedding to the SDO office. You can also check UGVCL/PGVCL/MGVCL/DGVCL power outage apps.
