What is the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP)?

The National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) is a Government of India initiative to provide free, accessible mental health care to all citizens โ€” especially those in rural and underserved areas. The programme's key component is the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) which integrates mental health services into every district hospital.

Under DMHP and NMHP:

  1. Go to your District Hospital or Government Medical College
  2. Register at the OPD reception (free registration)
  3. Ask for the Psychiatry OPD or DMHP centre
  4. See the psychiatrist or DMHP-trained medical officer

1. Is the psychiatrist consultation really free at government hospitals?

Yes. At government district hospitals and medical college hospitals under DMHP, consultation is free. Medicines from the government pharmacy are also free (from the NMHP medicine kit, which includes common psychiatric medications).

2. I am depressed but afraid of social stigma. Can I call the helpline anonymously?

Yes. TELE-MANAS counsellors maintain confidentiality. You do not have to give your name. You can call 14416 and speak in your regional language.

3. I have schizophrenia and need regular medicines. Can I get them free?

Yes. Under DMHP, antipsychotic medicines including risperidone, olanzapine, and haloperidol are in the government essential medicines list and dispensed free at district hospitals.

4. My village has no psychiatrist. How do I get help?

Call 14416 (TELE-MANAS) first. You will be connected to a counsellor and then referred to the nearest DMHP facility. Some states have mobile mental health units that visit remote areas periodically.

5. I need therapy (CBT/talk therapy), not just medicines. Is that available free?

Clinical Psychologists and counsellors are part of DMHP teams at district hospitals. Availability varies by state and district. Ask the DMHP centre head for psychotherapy appointments.
