What is Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MPJAY)?

Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MPJAY) — formerly Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana — is the Maharashtra government's cashless health insurance scheme providing free hospital treatment for critical illnesses to eligible Maharashtra families.

Coverage:

  • BPL/orange ration card families: ₹1,50,000/year per family
  • Yellow ration card (AAY) families: ₹2,00,000/year per family
  • Kisaan/farmers (debt-waiver scheme beneficiaries): Additional coverage as notified

Integrated with PM-JAY: Maharashtra has integrated MPJAY with the central Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme — eligible families get a combined coverage of up to ₹5 lakh/year.

What's Covered?

MPJAY covers 1,000+ procedures across 34 specialties:

  • Heart bypass surgery, angioplasty, heart valve surgery
  • Cancer treatment (chemotherapy, surgery, radiation)
  • Kidney transplant, dialysis
  • Hip/knee replacement
  • Neurological surgeries (brain/spine)
  • Caesarean delivery
  • Neonatal care for sick newborns
  • Burns, poly-trauma surgeries
  • Eye surgery (cataract, retina)

What's not covered: OPD consultation, routine tests, medicines for non-covered conditions, dental (except accidents), cosmetic surgery.

Who is Eligible?

  • Households with yellow ration card (Antyodaya) — Maharashtra's poorest
  • Households with orange ration card (BPL / Priority Household)
  • Farmers covered under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Man Dhan Yojana
  • Journalists (accredited) and their families
  • State government employees (through separate government health scheme)

Combined with PM-JAY: If your family is on the PM-JAY SECC list, you automatically get ₹5 lakh cover. MPJAY adds Maharashtra's additional schemes.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have an orange (BPL) ration card. How much coverage do I get?

With orange ration card, MPJAY provides ₹1,50,000/year per family. Combined with PM-JAY (if eligible via SECC), total can be ₹5 lakh/year.

The private hospital said I'm not covered for a procedure. What to do?

Ask to see the full MPJAY package list — all 1,000+ covered procedures are listed. If the procedure is on the list and you're eligible, the hospital is obligated to provide cashless treatment. Escalate to the MPJAY state helpline.

Can I use MPJAY outside Maharashtra (another state)?

MPJAY is Maharashtra-specific. For out-of-state treatment, you'd need PM-JAY (which works nationally) if your family is on the PM-JAY list. Emergency situations are usually managed case-by-case.

I am a journalist. How do I get MPJAY coverage?

Accredited journalists (with Maharashtra government press accreditation) are eligible. Apply through the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in Maharashtra.
