Total ₹5,000/month

The ₹500 government contribution is credited directly to the intern's bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

A one-time grant of ₹6,000 is provided at the start of the internship to cover incidental expenses (travel, accommodation setup, etc.).

Interns automatically get coverage under two central government insurance schemes at no cost:

  • PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) — life insurance cover ₹2 lakh
  • PM Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) — accident insurance cover ₹2 lakh

Completion Certificate

Upon successful completion of the 12-month internship, a government-recognised skill certificate is issued — useful for future job applications and government scheme eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a graduate with B.Tech apply?

Yes — B.Tech graduates from non-premier institutions (not IIT/NIT/IISER) between age 21–24 who are not currently enrolled in further studies and not in full-time employment are eligible.

Can I apply if I'm doing a part-time job?

Part-time employment status is a grey area — the condition is "full-time employment." If you're doing occasional freelance work or part-time roles, you may still be eligible. The key is you must not be in a formal full-time salaried position.

Is the ₹5,000 stipend taxable?

The ₹500 government DBT component and the ₹4,500 company component together form the stipend. Internship stipends are generally taxable as "income from other sources" if they exceed ₹2.5 lakh/year. ₹5,000 × 12 = ₹60,000 annually — this is below the basic exemption limit, so effectively no tax for most interns.

What happens if the company doesn't pay?

The company's ₹4,500 share is routed through the PM Internship Fund, not paid directly. The government oversees disbursement. Any issues can be raised through the portal's grievance mechanism.

Can I leave the internship midway?

You can exit, but you lose eligibility for the scheme in future rounds. The ₹6,000 one-time grant may need to be returned. The completion certificate is only issued at the end of 12 months.

Is this scheme only for unemployed youth?

Yes — it specifically targets those not in full-time employment or education, bridging the gap for youth who have completed education but haven't found formal employment.

Are internships available across all states?

Yes — companies post internships across multiple cities and states. Use the location filter on the portal to find opportunities near you.

What is the difference between PM Internship Scheme and NSP scholarships?

NSP (National Scholarship Portal) provides scholarships to students currently enrolled in education. PM Internship Scheme is for post-education youth (21–24) who are not currently studying — it's an industry experience programme, not an academic scholarship.
