What is PM Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)?
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (formerly Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana) is a maternity benefit programme by the Government of India launched in 2017. It provides cash incentive of ₹11,000 (enhanced from ₹5,000 under PMMVY 2.0 from 2024) to pregnant women and lactating mothers to compensate for wage loss, ensure proper nutrition, and promote institutional delivery.
Key Change (PMMVY 2.0): From 2024, the benefit has been enhanced to ₹11,000 for the second child (if the child is a girl), in addition to ₹5,000 for the first child.
Who is Eligible?
For First Living Child — ₹5,000
- All pregnant women and lactating mothers for their first living child
- Must be 19 years of age or above
- Registration must be done within 150 days of last menstrual period (LMP)
- Government/PSU employees and those availing similar benefits under other schemes are not eligible
For Second Child (Girl) — ₹6,000 Additional
- Second child must be a girl child
- Total benefit: ₹5,000 (first child) + ₹6,000 (second girl child) = ₹11,000

Note: Under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), an additional ₹1,400 is available for institutional delivery, bringing the total benefit close to ₹6,400 for the first child.

- Bank account passbook (Aadhaar-linked, in mother's name)
- MCP Card (Mother and Child Protection Card) from Anganwadi/health centre
- LMP date certificate from ANM/doctor
- Mobile number
For 2nd Instalment
- Institutional delivery proof (hospital discharge slip)
- Child's birth certificate
- Child vaccination record (first cycle completed)
For Second Girl Child Benefit
- Birth certificate of second child (girl)
- First child's birth certificate (to verify birth order)

How to Apply — Step-by-Step
Through Anganwadi Centre (Most Common)
Step 1: Visit Your Anganwadi
- Go to the nearest Anganwadi centre or health sub-centre
- Inform the Anganwadi Worker (AWW) or ASHA worker about your pregnancy
- They will help you register
Step 2: Fill Application Form
- The AWW/ASHA fills the PMMVY form (Form 1A for 1st instalment)
- Provide all documents (Aadhaar, bank details, MCP card)
- Sign or provide thumb impression
Step 3: Verification
- Block/District Programme Officer verifies the application
- Details are entered in the PMMVY-CAS (Common Application Software)
Step 4: Receive Benefit
- Amount is directly transferred to your bank account via DBT
- You receive an SMS notification

Processing Time
- Application to 1st instalment: 30-45 days after verification

Important Tips
- Register early — you must register within 150 days of your last menstrual period. Don't delay.
- Get MCP card first — register at your nearest Anganwadi or PHC to get the Mother and Child Protection Card.
- Ensure Aadhaar-linked bank account — benefits are transferred only to Aadhaar-linked accounts in the mother's name.
- Complete vaccinations — the second instalment requires proof of child's first vaccination cycle.
- ASHA/AWW are your helpers — don't hesitate to ask your local ASHA or Anganwadi worker for assistance with forms and documents.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: Is PMMVY available for the third child?
No. PMMVY is available only for the first child and second child (if girl). Third and subsequent pregnancies are not covered.
Q2: Can government employees apply?
No. Women who are government employees, PSU employees, or those receiving maternity benefits under any other law are not eligible for PMMVY.
Q3: What if I had a miscarriage?
If you received the 1st instalment and subsequently had a miscarriage, you can apply again for a future pregnancy. The earlier benefit is not counted against your eligibility.
Q4: Is there an income limit?
No. There is no income limit for PMMVY. All pregnant women (except government employees and those covered under other maternity benefit schemes) are eligible.
Q5: Can I get the benefit if I deliver at home?
For the 1st instalment, home delivery or institutional delivery — both are fine (it's for registration). However, the 2nd instalment requires institutional delivery (hospital/health centre).
Q6: What if I don't have an Aadhaar card?

Q7: Can unmarried mothers apply?
Yes. PMMVY does not require marriage certificate. Unmarried mothers, single mothers, and widows are all eligible.
