What is PM Matru Vandana Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity benefit programme launched by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. It provides ₹5,000 in cash directly to a pregnant woman's bank account for the first child in three installments to encourage proper nutrition and health checkups during pregnancy.

From 2022, the scheme was expanded to also provide ₹6,000 for the second child (if it is a girl).

Key features:

  • ₹5,000 for the first live birth (in 3 installments)
  • ₹6,000 for the second child if it is a girl baby
  • No income limit for the first child
  • Payment via DBT directly to mother's Aadhaar-linked bank account
  • Applies to all working and non-working women

Who is Eligible?

For ₹5,000 (First Child):

  • Pregnant women carrying their first child
  • Age 19 years or above at the time of pregnancy
  • Not employed in any public sector institution (central/state government salaried employees who get maternity benefit are excluded)
  • Must register early in pregnancy (preferably within first trimester)

  • Applicable if the second live birth is a girl child
  • Amount paid as a lump sum after childbirth

Scheme For Amount
PMMVY All pregnant women (1st child) ₹5,000
JSY BPL women, institutional delivery ₹700–₹1,400 (depending on state/rural/urban)

Both can be availed simultaneously — the total benefit from both can be up to ₹6,400 for institutional delivery in a rural area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I am a government employee?

Central and state government employees who get paid maternity leave are not eligible for PMMVY, as they already receive maternity benefits from their employer.

I am pregnant for the second time but the first child died. Am I eligible?

Yes — if the first child did not survive and this is your first live birth, you are eligible for ₹5,000.

Can I apply for PMMVY if I gave birth at home (not hospital)?

Yes — PMMVY is not restricted to institutional delivery. However, the 3rd installment requires the child's vaccination record, which is easier to maintain if birth registration is done.

My Aadhaar is not linked to my bank account. What to do?

Visit your bank branch with Aadhaar and request Aadhaar-bank seeding. Also update Aadhaar with NPCI mapper. Without this, DBT payment will fail.

When is the last date to apply?

Apply within 730 days (2 years) of the delivery date for the installments. Earlier is better — first installment must be applied for during pregnancy.

What happens to the benefit for a second girl child?

The ₹6,000 for the second girl child is paid as a lump sum after the child's birth is registered and immunization has begun.
