What is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is the Government of India's flagship housing scheme launched in 2015 to provide affordable housing to economically weaker sections of society. The scheme aims to ensure "Housing for All" by providing financial assistance for building or buying homes.

PMAY has two components:

  • PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U): For urban areas — covers cities and towns
  • PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G): For rural areas — covers villages and small settlements

The scheme provides interest subsidies on home loans, direct financial assistance, and support for construction of pucca houses. See our PMAY Gramin vs Urban comparison guide for detailed differences.

How to Apply for PMAY-Gramin

PMAY-Gramin follows a different process — beneficiaries are selected from government data, not through direct online applications.

Step 1: Check SECC Data

Beneficiaries are identified through Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data. Visit pmayg.nic.in to check if your name is in the list.

Step 2: Gram Sabha Verification

The Gram Sabha verifies and prioritizes the list of eligible beneficiaries. Attend your village's Gram Sabha meetings to stay informed.

Step 3: Gram Panchayat Registration

If eligible, register with your Gram Panchayat office. Submit all required documents.

Step 4: Verification by Block/District Office

Block Development Officer (BDO) and district officials verify your eligibility and approve the application.

Step 5: Sanction Order

Once approved, you receive a sanction order. The financial assistance of ₹1.20 lakh (plain areas) or ₹1.30 lakh (hilly/difficult areas) is released in installments linked to construction milestones.

Step 6: Track Progress

Check your beneficiary status online at the official PMAY-G portal.

  1. Apply through official portal only — avoid third-party websites that charge extra fees
  2. Keep Aadhaar linked to bank account — subsidy is transferred via DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer)
  3. Women ownership is preferred — property should be in the name of female family member or jointly owned
  4. Don't delay construction — PMAY-G requires completion within the stipulated timeline or the benefit may be cancelled
  5. Save your application ID — you'll need it to check status and track progress
