Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world, with over 12 lakh employees. Every year, Railways recruits thousands of candidates through various exams conducted by Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs).

Types of Railway Jobs
Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC)
These are office-based and station-based posts:
- Station Master
- Commercial Apprentice
- Traffic Assistant
- Goods Guard
- Senior Clerk
- Junior Account Assistant
Qualification: Graduation (for some posts, 12th pass is sufficient)
Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) and Technicians
- ALP: Drives trains under the guidance of a Loco Pilot
- Technicians: Maintain railway equipment and infrastructure
Qualification: 10th + ITI or Diploma in Engineering
Group D (Level 1 Posts)
- Track Maintainer Grade IV
- Helper/Assistant in various departments
- Porter, Gateman
Qualification: 10th pass + ITI (for some posts, 10th alone is sufficient)
Railway Protection Force (RPF)
- Constable
- Sub-Inspector
Qualification: 10th pass (Constable), Graduation (SI)
Group A Services (Through UPSC)
- Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS)
- Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE)
- Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS)
These are recruited through UPSC Civil Services or UPSC Engineering Services exam.

RRB NTPC
CBT 1 (Computer-Based Test ā Stage 1):
- 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes
- Sections: Mathematics (30), General Intelligence & Reasoning (30), General Awareness (40)
- Negative marking: 1/3rd per wrong answer
CBT 2 (Stage 2):
- 120 questions, 120 marks, 90 minutes
- Same sections with higher difficulty
Typing/CBAT: For specific posts (Station Master needs CBAT, Clerk needs typing test)
RRB ALP
CBT 1:
- 75 questions, 75 marks, 60 minutes
- Mathematics, General Intelligence, General Science, General Awareness
CBT 2:
- Part A: Same as CBT 1 (100 questions)
- Part B: Trade-specific questions (75 questions)
RRC Group D
CBT:
- 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes
- Mathematics (25), General Intelligence (25), General Science (25), General Awareness (25)
PET (Physical Efficiency Test):
- Male: Lift 35 kg and carry for 100m in 2 minutes; run 1000m in 4 min 15 sec
- Female: Lift 20 kg and carry for 100m in 2 minutes; run 1000m in 5 min 40 sec
How to Apply for Railway Jobs
Step 1: Find the Notification
- Visit rrbcdg.gov.in or your zonal RRB website
- Check "Latest Notifications" section
- Download the official CEN (Centralised Employment Notice)
- Read eligibility and vacancy details carefully
Step 2: Register Online
- Visit the application portal (link given in the notification)
- Create an account with email and mobile number
- Complete registration with personal details
- Note down your Registration Number
Step 3: Fill Application Form
- Log in and fill personal, educational, and other details
- Select your preferred RRB zone
- Choose post preferences (in order of priority)
- Select exam language preference
Step 4: Upload Documents
- Upload recent passport-size photograph (20-50 KB, JPEG)
- Upload signature (10-20 KB, JPEG)
- Verify the preview
Step 5: Pay Fee and Submit
- General/OBC: ā¹500 (ā¹400 refunded after CBT stage 1 if appeared)
- SC/ST/Ex-Servicemen/PwBD/Female/Transgender/Minorities/EBC: ā¹250 (fully refunded)
- Payment: Online via debit card, credit card, net banking, UPI

Frequently Asked Questions
How often does Railway recruitment happen?
Major railway recruitments (NTPC, Group D, ALP) happen every 2-3 years. RPF recruitment is less frequent. Check the official RRB websites regularly for notifications.
Can I apply for both NTPC and Group D simultaneously?
Yes, if both notifications are open at the same time and you meet the eligibility for both, you can apply separately for each.
Is ITI mandatory for Group D posts?
For most Group D posts, 10th pass + ITI is required. However, some posts accept 10th pass with NAC (National Apprenticeship Certificate) or equivalent.
What is the medical standard for railway jobs?
Railway jobs have strict medical standards, especially for safety-related posts. ALP requires Aye-One vision (distance vision 6/6 without glasses). Group D requires Aye-Three. RPF has additional physical standards.
Can I choose my posting location after selection?
During the application, you select your preferred RRB zone. Posting is within that zone, but the exact location is decided by the railway administration based on vacancies.
