Frequently Asked Questions

Can women join the Indian Armed Forces?

Yes, women can join as officers through NDA (from 2022), CDS, SSC Tech, AFCAT, and other entries. Agniveer scheme also allows women in certain categories. Permanent Commission is now available for women in most branches.

Is there an age relaxation for defence jobs?

For officer entries through UPSC (NDA, CDS), there is generally no age relaxation. For Agniveer and some other entries, OBC/SC/ST may get relaxation as specified in the notification.

What is the difference between NDA and CDS?

NDA is for 12th-pass candidates (16.5-19.5 years) — they train for 3 years at NDA before commissioning. CDS is for graduates (20-25 years) — they train for 1-1.5 years at respective academies. Both lead to Permanent Commission as officers.

Can I join the Army without the Agniveer scheme?

For soldier-level entry, Agniveer is now the only route. For officer-level entry, you can join through NDA, CDS, SSC Tech, TGC, NCC entry, or university entry schemes without going through Agniveer.

What happens after 4 years of Agniveer service?

After 4 years, up to 25% of Agniveers are retained for regular 15-year service based on performance. The remaining 75% are released with Seva Nidhi (approx. ₹11.71 lakh) and can apply for other government jobs with reservation and age relaxation benefits.

Read about Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), practice group discussions, work on your general awareness, improve communication skills, and stay physically fit. Many coaching centres offer SSB preparation courses. Self-preparation with books like "Let's Crack SSB" is also effective.
