Preparation Tips

1. Prioritise English

English carries 100 out of 200 marks — half the paper. Strong English skills almost guarantee selection. Focus on:

  • Grammar rules (tenses, articles, prepositions)
  • Vocabulary building (learn 10 new words daily)
  • Reading comprehension practice

2. Build Shorthand Speed Gradually

If you're new to shorthand, start learning now — it takes 3–6 months to reach 80 wpm and 6–12 months for 100 wpm.

  • Practice daily without fail
  • Use standard shorthand books (Pitman's or equivalent)
  • Record dictation and practice transcription on computer

3. Don't Neglect General Awareness

50 marks from GK can make or break your selection. Read a newspaper daily and revise static GK topics.

4. Reasoning Is Scoring

With consistent practice, reasoning becomes the easiest section. Solve 25–30 questions daily from previous papers.

5. Practice Typing on Computer

Transcription is done on a computer. Even if your shorthand is good, slow typing will fail you. Practice typing regularly.

6. Solve Previous Years' Papers

SSC Stenographer papers follow a predictable pattern. Solve the last 5–7 years' papers.
