What is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the official, free, government registration for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. It replaced the old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system from July 2020. Any business โ€” manufacturing or service โ€” that qualifies as micro, small, or medium can register at udyamregistration.gov.in and get a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) and Udyam Certificate.

Registration is completely free, takes about 15โ€“30 minutes, and gives your business legal MSME status โ€” which unlocks a large set of government benefits, subsidies, and protections.

MSME Classification (Who Qualifies?)

Category Investment in Plant & Machinery Annual Turnover
Micro Up to โ‚น1 crore Up to โ‚น5 crore
Small Up to โ‚น10 crore Up to โ‚น50 crore
Medium Up to โ‚น50 crore Up to โ‚น250 crore
  • Both criteria (investment AND turnover) must be within limits for the category
  • The classification is based on the PAN-linked data auto-fetched from the Income Tax and GSTN portals

Eligible: Manufacturing businesses, service businesses, traders, artisans, professionals, sole proprietors, partnership firms, companies, LLPs, trusts, societies โ€” all can register.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Udyam registration mandatory for MSMEs?

It is not legally mandatory to run a business, but it is required to access MSME benefits โ€” loans, subsidies, government tenders, and welfare schemes. Without it, you are not officially classified as an MSME.

I already have Udyog Aadhaar (old registration). Do I need to re-register?

Yes โ€” Udyog Aadhaar and EM (Entrepreneur Memorandum) registrations were valid till December 31, 2021. If you haven't migrated to Udyam yet, you must re-register on the Udyam portal. The old registration is no longer valid.

Can I register multiple businesses under the same Aadhaar?

No โ€” one Aadhaar can be used for only one Udyam registration. If you have multiple businesses, each needs a separate registration (but uses the same Aadhaar of the owner).

Is there a fee for Udyam registration?

No โ€” Udyam Registration is completely free on udyamregistration.gov.in. Be wary of third-party websites that charge fees for this registration.

What NIC code should I select?

NIC (National Industry Classification) codes describe your business activity. Visit mospi.gov.in and search for your business activity to find the right NIC code. The Udyam portal also provides a search function.

My business turnover crossed โ‚น250 crore. What happens?

If your investment or turnover exceeds the medium enterprise limits, you must update your Udyam registration. The business will then be reclassified as a "large enterprise" and will lose MSME status.
