What is ZED Certification?

ZED (Zero Defect Zero Effect) Certification is a Government of India programme under the Ministry of MSME that helps small and medium enterprises improve their quality standards and reduce environmental impact. Certified MSMEs get:

Who is Eligible?

How to Apply — Step by Step

Step 1 — Register on ZED Portal

Step 2 — Self-Assessment

Complete the online self-assessment questionnaire covering:

• Quality practices (defect rates, return rates, customer complaints)
• Environmental practices (waste, energy, pollution)
• Production processes and workforce practices

Step 3 — Handholding and Improvement

A ZED consultant is assigned (free for micro/small enterprises) to:

• Review your self-assessment
• Suggest improvements
• Help you achieve the rating you are targeting

Step 4 — External Assessment

An external assessor (certified by Quality Council of India or Bureau of Indian Standards) visits your unit and assesses actual practices.

Step 5 — Rating Certificate

Based on the assessment, you receive your ZED rating certificate (Bronze/Silver/Gold) — valid for 3 years.

Step 6 — Subsidy on Certification Cost

Claim the subsidy (80% for micro, 60% for small, 50% for medium) on the assessor's fee and certification cost directly on the portal.

ZED and GeM Marketplace

ZED-certified enterprises get:

• Priority listing on Government e-Marketplace (gem.gov.in)
• Purchase preference from government buyers
• Access to Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat procurement

Yes. ZED is a separate quality framework — you do not need ISO certification to start. ZED Bronze is for enterprises with basic quality practices in place.

4. What is the advantage of Gold vs Bronze ZED rating?

ZED Gold is broadly equivalent to international quality management standards. While it is not a direct substitute for ISO or CE marking (required for EU), it demonstrates quality discipline that improves your credibility in export markets.
