What is Karnataka Bhagyalakshmi Scheme?
The Bhagyalakshmi Scheme is a social welfare programme by the Government of Karnataka aimed at empowering girl children born in Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. Launched in 2006 by the Department of Women and Child Development, the scheme provides financial assistance through a savings bond that matures when the girl turns 18.
The scheme encourages families to:
- Educate their girl children and prevent school dropouts
- Delay child marriage by incentivising education until 18 years
- Improve health outcomes through linked health insurance benefits
Under this scheme, a bond of up to ₹1,00,000 (₹1 lakh) is deposited in the name of the girl child at birth, which can be encashed upon turning 18, provided she has completed her education and remains unmarried until then.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is the total amount a girl receives under Bhagyalakshmi?
The maturity value at age 18 is approximately ₹1,00,000. Additionally, the girl receives annual scholarships ranging from ₹300 to ₹1,000 during school years, and the family gets health insurance coverage.
Q2: Can a family with 3 children apply?
