MGNREGA – 100 Days Employment Guarantee Scheme
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) provides a legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment per year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. It is one of the largest employment programmes in the world, covering all rural districts of India.
What is MGNREGA?
MGNREGA is a demand-driven employment programme that:
- Guarantees 100 days of employment per financial year to every rural household
- Provides unskilled manual work within 5 km of the worker's residence
- Pays minimum wages as notified by the state government
- Provides unemployment allowance if work is not provided within 15 days of demand
- Creates durable assets — roads, water conservation structures, land development, etc.
- Employment must be provided within 15 days of demand, otherwise unemployment allowance is due
