What is SBI UPI?

SBI UPI (Unified Payments Interface) allows State Bank of India customers to send and receive money instantly using apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, and YONO SBI. UPI is regulated by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) and works 24/7 for real-time bank transfers using a UPI ID (VPA).

If your SBI UPI is not working, this guide covers all common problems and step-by-step fixes.

Common SBI UPI Problems and Fixes

1. UPI PIN Reset / Forgot UPI PIN

If you forgot your UPI PIN or it's not being accepted:

Steps to reset UPI PIN:

  1. Open your UPI app (Google Pay / PhonePe / BHIM)
  2. Go to Bank Accounts → Select your SBI account
  3. Tap Forgot UPI PIN or Reset UPI PIN
  4. Enter your SBI debit card number (last 6 digits) and expiry date
  5. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number
  6. Enter the OTP and set a new 6-digit UPI PIN
  7. Confirm the new PIN

Note: You must have a valid, active SBI debit card linked to the account to reset UPI PIN.

2. SBI UPI Server Error / Transaction Failed

Server-side errors are common during peak hours. Error codes you may see:

Error Code Meaning Fix
U69 Timeout / Server down Wait 30 minutes and retry
U16 Risk threshold exceeded Contact SBI or try smaller amount
U28 Transaction limit exceeded Check daily UPI limit (₹1 lakh)
U30 Debit failed at bank end Check account balance and status
ZM Invalid MPIN Reset UPI PIN

General fixes for server errors:

  1. Check SBI server status — issues are common during maintenance windows (usually late night)
  2. Ensure stable internet connection (switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data)
  3. Update the UPI app to the latest version
  4. Clear app cache: Settings → Apps → [App Name] → Clear Cache
  5. Wait 30 minutes before retrying if you see timeout errors

3. SBI Debit Card Expired — Cannot Set UPI PIN

If your debit card has expired, you cannot set or reset your UPI PIN.

How to fix:

  1. Apply for a new SBI debit card via YONO SBI app or visit your home branch
  2. Once you receive the new card, activate it at any SBI ATM
  3. After activation, open your UPI app and reset UPI PIN using the new card details
  4. Enter the new card's last 6 digits and expiry date

See our SBI Debit Card Apply guide for detailed steps.

4. VPA (UPI ID) Issues

Common VPA problems:

  • VPA not found: Your UPI ID may have been deactivated due to inactivity (no transaction for 1+ year)
  • VPA already exists: Someone else may have created a VPA with your preferred name on another app
  • Invalid VPA format: SBI VPA format is usually mobilenumber@sbi or username@oksbi

How to fix VPA issues:

  1. Open the UPI app → Go to Profile or UPI ID settings
  2. Create a new VPA if the old one is deactivated
  3. For BHIM SBI Pay, VPA format is mobilenumber@sbi
  4. For Google Pay, VPA format is username@okaxis or username@oksbi
  5. Ensure your mobile number is linked to your SBI account

5. SBI Bank Account Not Linking to UPI App

If you cannot add your SBI account to a UPI app:

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check registered mobile number: The SIM card in your phone must match the mobile number registered with SBI. Send an SMS from this number to verify
  2. Dual SIM issue: Set the SBI-registered SIM as default for SMS sending
  3. SMS permissions: Allow the UPI app to send and read SMS (required for initial verification)
  4. Account status: Ensure your SBI account is active (not frozen, dormant, or closed)
  5. YONO registration: If using YONO SBI, complete YONO registration first
  6. Try a different UPI app: If Google Pay doesn't work, try PhonePe or BHIM and vice versa

Steps to link SBI account:

  1. Open UPI app → Add Bank Account
  2. Select State Bank of India
  3. The app will send a verification SMS from your registered number
  4. Your SBI accounts linked to that mobile number will appear
  5. Select the account and set UPI PIN using your debit card

6. SBI UPI Daily Limit Issues

SBI UPI transaction limits:

Transaction Type Limit
Per transaction ₹1,00,000
Daily limit ₹1,00,000
UPI Lite (small value) ₹500 per transaction, ₹2,000 wallet limit
Merchant payments ₹1,00,000

If you're hitting limits, split the transaction or wait until the next day (limit resets at midnight).

Important Tips

  1. Keep your SBI debit card active — It's required for UPI PIN reset and initial setup
  2. Update your mobile number at SBI branch if you've changed your SIM — UPI won't work without the registered number
  3. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone — SBI or UPI apps will never ask for it
  4. Check NPCI status at npci.org.in during widespread outages
  5. Raise complaint via the UPI app's built-in dispute mechanism if money is debited but not credited (auto-refund within 5 business days)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why is my SBI UPI not working on Google Pay?

Most common reasons are: expired debit card, mobile number mismatch, or SBI server downtime. Check all three and follow the fixes above.

Q2. How do I reset my SBI UPI PIN without a debit card?

You cannot reset UPI PIN without a valid debit card. Apply for a new SBI debit card first, then reset the PIN using the new card details.

Q3. Why does SBI UPI show "Transaction Failed"?

This can happen due to insufficient balance, server issues, exceeded daily limit, or incorrect UPI PIN. Check the error code in your transaction history for the specific reason.

Q4. Can I use SBI UPI with a different phone number?

No. UPI requires the SBI-registered mobile number's SIM to be in your phone. Visit your SBI branch to update your mobile number if needed.

Q5. How long does SBI UPI refund take?

If money is debited but not received by the beneficiary, it is auto-reversed within 3-5 business days. You can raise a complaint in the UPI app if it takes longer.

SBI systems may undergo maintenance typically between 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM IST. Avoid transactions during this window.

Q7. Can I use SBI UPI internationally?

UPI is designed for domestic (India) transactions only. For international transfers, use SBI's remittance services.
