UPI ID Not Found or Invalid? How to Fix Payment Address Errors

When you try to send money via UPI and get "UPI ID not found," "Invalid VPA," or "Beneficiary not found," it means the UPI address you entered doesn't exist or isn't active. This guide covers all the reasons this happens and how to fix it โ€” whether you're the sender or the recipient.

What Is a UPI ID (VPA)?

A UPI ID (also called VPA โ€” Virtual Payment Address) is your unique payment address, like an email address for money. Format: username@bankhandle

Examples:

  • 9876543210@ybl (PhonePe)
  • username@okaxis (Google Pay)
  • username@paytm (Paytm)
  • 9876543210@upi (BHIM)
  • username@oksbi (SBI)
  • username@icici (ICICI)

Why "UPI ID Not Found" Error Occurs

1. Wrong UPI ID Format

The most common cause. UPI IDs must follow the exact format: name@handle. Common mistakes:

Mistake Example Fix
Missing @ symbol 9876543210ybl Add @ โ†’ 9876543210@ybl
Wrong bank handle user@phonepe Use correct handle โ†’ user@ybl
Extra spaces user @ybl Remove spaces โ†’ user@ybl
Capital letters User@YBL Use lowercase โ†’ user@ybl
Typo in handle user@ybll Fix typo โ†’ user@ybl

2. Bank Account Not Linked to UPI

The recipient has a UPI app installed but hasn't linked their bank account. Without a linked bank account, the VPA exists but can't receive money.

3. Bank Account Closed or Dormant

If the recipient's bank account has been closed, frozen, or marked dormant (no activity for 12-24 months), their UPI ID becomes invalid.

4. VPA Not Registered

The UPI ID was never created. The person may have given you a wrong ID, or they may have deregistered from UPI.

5. Recipient Changed UPI App

When someone switches from PhonePe to Google Pay, their old UPI ID (@ybl) may become inactive. Their new ID would use a different handle (@okaxis or @okhdfcbank).

6. Bank Handle Mismatch

Each UPI app creates IDs with specific bank handles. If you use the wrong handle, the ID won't be found:

UPI App Common Handles
Google Pay @okaxis, @okhdfcbank, @oksbi, @okicici
PhonePe @ybl, @ibl, @axl
Paytm @paytm
BHIM @upi
Amazon Pay @apl
WhatsApp Pay @waaxis, @wahdfcbank, @wasbi
CRED @axisb, @icici

How to Fix โ€” For Senders

Step 1: Verify the UPI ID Before Sending

All UPI apps verify the recipient's name before you enter your PIN:

  1. Enter the UPI ID in the "Send money" screen
  2. The app will show the recipient's name linked to that UPI ID
  3. If no name appears or you get an error, the ID is invalid
  4. Confirm the name matches the person you want to pay

Step 2: Double-Check the UPI ID

  • Ask the recipient to share their UPI ID from their app (not from memory)
  • In most apps: Profile โ†’ UPI ID or Payment address
  • Compare character by character โ€” even one wrong letter causes failure

Step 3: Try the Recipient's Phone Number

Instead of UPI ID, try sending money to their registered mobile number. Most UPI apps allow this:

  1. Tap "Send Money" โ†’ "To Mobile Number"
  2. Enter the recipient's phone number
  3. The app will find their linked UPI accounts
  4. Select the correct one and proceed

Step 4: Ask Recipient to Use QR Code

The safest method โ€” no typing errors possible:

  1. Ask the recipient to open their UPI app
  2. They should go to "Receive Money" or show their QR code
  3. Scan the QR code with your UPI app
  4. Verify the name and amount, then pay

How to Fix โ€” For Recipients

If people tell you your UPI ID isn't working:

Step 1: Check Your UPI ID

  1. Open your UPI app
  2. Go to Profile or Settings
  3. Find "UPI ID" or "Payment Address"
  4. Share this exact ID with the sender

Step 2: Verify Bank Account Linking

  1. Open your UPI app โ†’ Bank Accounts
  2. Check if your bank account is properly linked
  3. If not linked, add your bank account using your debit card
  4. Set or reset your UPI PIN if needed โ€” see our UPI PIN guide

Step 3: Check Bank Account Status

If your bank account is dormant or frozen:

  1. Visit your bank branch with ID proof
  2. Reactivate the account
  3. Then re-link it on your UPI app

Step 4: Re-Register on UPI

If nothing works, deregister and re-register:

  1. Remove bank account from UPI app
  2. Uninstall and reinstall the app
  3. Register again with your mobile number
  4. Add bank account and set UPI PIN

FAQs

How do I verify if a UPI ID is valid?

Enter the UPI ID in your app's "Send Money" screen. If the app shows the account holder's name, the ID is valid. If it shows an error, the ID doesn't exist or is inactive.

Can a UPI ID expire?

UPI IDs don't technically expire, but they become inactive if the linked bank account is closed, the user deregisters from UPI, or the bank handle changes.

Can two people have the same UPI ID?

No. Each UPI ID is unique across the entire UPI ecosystem. However, one person can have multiple UPI IDs across different apps (e.g., one @ybl, one @okaxis).

Why does my UPI ID work on PhonePe but not when others send me money?

Your PhonePe UPI ID (@ybl) may be different from the ID you shared. Make sure you share the exact ID shown in your app's profile section.

Can I create a custom UPI ID?

Yes, most UPI apps let you create a custom UPI ID (e.g., yourname@ybl instead of phonenumber@ybl). Go to your app's profile settings to create or change it.

What if someone sent money to a wrong UPI ID?

If money was sent to a wrong but valid UPI ID, it's credited to that person's account. Contact your bank immediately and file a complaint. The bank will try to coordinate a reversal, but it requires the other party's consent. See our UPI transaction failed guide for complaint steps.
