The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year. It is the gateway for young Indians to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as officers. This guide covers everything you need to know — from eligibility to preparation strategy.

What is the NDA Exam?

The NDA exam is a national-level entrance test for candidates who wish to join the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla (Pune). After clearing the written exam and SSB interview, selected candidates undergo a 3-year training programme at NDA, followed by service-specific training at:

  • Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun — Army
  • Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala — Navy
  • Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal — Air Force

UPSC conducts NDA I (April) and NDA II (September) every year.


Who is Eligible for NDA?

Age Limit

  • Candidate must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age on the first day of the course commencement.
  • Example: For NDA I 2026 (course starting January 2027), candidates born between 2nd July 2007 and 1st July 2010 (approximately) would be eligible. Check the official notification for exact dates.

Educational Qualification

Wing Minimum Qualification
Army Class 12 pass (or appearing) from a recognised board
Navy & Air Force Class 12 pass (or appearing) with Physics and Mathematics

Gender

  • Male and unmarried candidates can apply.
  • Female candidates are now eligible for NDA as per Supreme Court directives. Check the latest notification for updated criteria.

Nationality

  • Must be a citizen of India (or subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962, or person of Indian origin migrated from certain countries with intention to permanently settle).

Physical Standards

  • Candidates must meet physical and medical standards as prescribed by the Armed Forces. Minimum height is generally 157 cm for Army and 157 cm for Navy/Air Force (varies by branch).
  • Good eyesight is critical, especially for Air Force (no spectacles allowed for Air Force entry).

NDA Exam Pattern

The NDA written exam has two papers:

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Visit the official UPSC website: upsconline.nic.in
  2. Register — Click on the NDA examination link, create an account with a valid email and phone number
  3. Fill the application form — Enter personal details, educational qualification, exam centre preference
  4. Upload documents — Passport-size photograph and signature (as per specifications in the notification)
  5. Pay the fee — Online via net banking, UPI, or debit/credit card
  6. Submit and download the confirmation page
  7. Download admit card — Available on the UPSC website approximately 2–3 weeks before the exam

SSB Interview Overview

Candidates who clear the written exam are called for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, which lasts 5 days:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Can girls apply for NDA exam?

Yes. Following the Supreme Court of India's directive, female candidates are eligible to apply for NDA. Check the latest UPSC notification for specific guidelines.

Q2: How many times can I attempt the NDA exam?

You can attempt the NDA exam multiple times, as long as you meet the age criteria (16.5 to 19.5 years). There is no limit on number of attempts within the age bracket.

Q3: Is coaching necessary for NDA preparation?

No. Many candidates have cleared NDA through self-study using NCERT books, previous year papers, and online resources. Coaching can help, but it's not mandatory.

Q4: What happens after clearing the NDA written exam?

You will be called for the SSB interview (5-day process). If you clear both, you undergo a medical examination. Final merit is based on written + SSB marks combined.

Q5: Can I apply for NDA if I am in Class 12?

Yes. Candidates appearing in Class 12 (i.e., awaiting results) are eligible to apply. You must pass Class 12 before joining the academy.

Q6: What is the salary of an NDA cadet?

During training, NDA cadets receive a stipend of approximately ₹56,100/month (as per 7th Pay Commission). After commissioning as a Lieutenant, the pay scale starts at approximately ₹56,100–1,77,500 (Level 10).

Q7: Is there negative marking in NDA exam?

Yes. For every wrong answer, one-third (1/3) of the marks allotted to that question is deducted. Unanswered questions carry no penalty.
