What is PM Jan Dhan Yojana?

PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is India's national financial inclusion scheme launched in August 2014. It provides every household access to a basic savings bank account with no minimum balance requirement. The scheme ensures that people who never had a bank account — especially in rural and semi-urban areas — can participate in the formal banking system.

With a Jan Dhan account, you automatically get a RuPay debit card, accident insurance cover, and access to other government benefits like Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), LPG subsidy, pension, and scholarship payments.

Key Benefits

  • Zero balance account — no minimum balance required, ever
  • RuPay debit card — accepted at all ATMs and most shops
  • Accident insurance: ₹2 lakh for accounts opened after August 28, 2018 (₹1 lakh for earlier accounts)
  • Life insurance cover: ₹30,000 (for those who opened account before January 26, 2015 and meet conditions)
  • Overdraft facility: Up to ₹10,000 (for accounts with 6 months of satisfactory transactions)
  • Mobile banking — check balance, mini statement via missed call
  • Direct Benefit Transfer — government subsidies and scheme money credited directly to your account
  • Interest on deposits as per savings account rates

Who is Eligible?

  • Any Indian citizen aged 10 years and above
  • People who do not have a bank account anywhere (unbanked individuals)
  • Even those with existing bank accounts can open a Jan Dhan account, but overdraft and insurance benefits may not apply
  • Available for both rural and urban residents

No income limit or documents barrier. Even if you do not have all documents, a Small Account can be opened with just a self-attested photograph.

Documents Required

  1. Aadhaar card (preferred — serves as both identity and address proof)
  2. If Aadhaar not available: PAN card + any one address proof (voter ID, driving licence, passport, NREGA card)
  3. Passport size photograph
  4. Mobile number (for SMS alerts)

Small Account (if you don't have Aadhaar or full KYC documents):

  1. Self-attested photograph
  2. Self-attested signature/thumb impression
  • Small accounts have limits: max ₹50,000 balance and ₹1 lakh annual transactions. Upgrade to full account once KYC done.

How to Open Jan Dhan Account — Step by Step

At Bank Branch:

  1. Visit any bank branch — public sector banks (SBI, PNB, BOB, Canara, etc.), regional rural banks, or cooperative banks
  2. Ask for the Jan Dhan / PMJDY account opening form
  3. Fill in: your name, address, date of birth, nominee details, mobile number
  4. Submit with Aadhaar card and photograph
  5. Account is opened on the spot or within 1–2 days
  6. RuPay debit card is issued within 2–3 weeks (or given at the branch)

Via Business Correspondent (BC) / Bank Mitra:

  • In rural areas, you can open the account through a Bank Mitra (doorstep banking agent) without going to a branch
  • The Bank Mitra does biometric KYC using a handheld device and opens your account instantly

Online (limited availability):

  • Some banks like SBI allow Jan Dhan account opening via their online portal, but final KYC at branch is required
  • Visit your bank's website → "Open Jan Dhan Account" (if available)

How to Check Jan Dhan Account Balance

  1. Missed call: Give a missed call from your registered mobile to your bank's balance enquiry number
    • SBI: 9223766666

  2. SMS banking: Send SMS to your bank's number

Overdraft Facility — How to Get ₹10,000

After maintaining your Jan Dhan account for at least 6 months with regular transactions:

  1. Visit your bank branch
  2. Ask for overdraft against Jan Dhan account
  3. Fill the overdraft request form
  4. Bank checks: 6-month average balance, number of transactions, no default history
  5. If approved: ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 overdraft is sanctioned
  6. Preferably for women account holders (₹10,000 limit; men get ₹5,000)

The overdraft is like a mini loan — withdraw when needed, repay when you have money. Interest is charged only on the amount withdrawn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have both a regular bank account and a Jan Dhan account?

Yes — you can have both. But the accident insurance and life cover under PMJDY are linked to your Jan Dhan (RuPay) card and apply when you use the card at least once in 45 days before the incident.

How does the ₹2 lakh accident insurance work?

It is provided by NPCI through RuPay card. In case of accidental death or permanent disability, the nominee/claimant receives ₹2 lakh. You must have used the RuPay card at least once in 45 days before the accident. The claim is filed with the bank.

Are government scheme benefits (PM Kisan, LPG subsidy) directly credited to Jan Dhan?

Yes — Jan Dhan accounts are linked to Aadhaar for DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). PM Kisan, Ujjwala subsidy, MNREGA wages, and other benefits are credited directly.

Can children open a Jan Dhan account?

Yes — minors aged 10 and above can open a Jan Dhan account in their own name. Below 10 years, parents/guardians can open on their behalf (jointly operated).

Is Jan Dhan account free?

The account opening is free. There is no minimum balance. The RuPay debit card is usually free (no annual fee for basic variant). Some banks may charge for paper account statements — ask before opening.

My Jan Dhan account became inactive. What should I do?

If there are no transactions for 2 years, the account becomes dormant. Visit your branch with your Aadhaar card and request to reactivate it. Submit a KYC update form. It is reactivated within a few days.
