What is PM TB Mukt Bharat?

Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan is the Government of India's mission to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) from India by 2025 — ahead of the global 2030 target. A key part of this campaign is Ni-kshay Mitra — a community adoption programme.

Under Ni-kshay Mitra:

  • Citizens, corporates, NGOs, elected representatives, and government departments volunteer to support TB patients (called adoptees)
  • They provide food/nutrition support, diagnostics, vocational training, and emotional support
  • TB patients are already getting the Nikshay Poshan Yojana stipend (₹500/month from the government) — Ni-kshay Mitras provide additional community support on top of that

What Can Ni-kshay Mitras Provide?

Support Type What It Means
Nutritional support Food baskets, dry ration kits, milk, eggs, protein supplements
Diagnostic support Lab tests, X-rays (beyond what government provides)
Vocational support Skill training, job assistance for patients undergoing long treatment
Emotional support Counselling, moral support, follow-up calls
Additional medicines Nutritional supplements (not anti-TB drugs — those are free from government)

Who Can Become a Ni-kshay Mitra?

  • Individuals — anyone can volunteer (no minimum income requirement)
  • Corporates — can use this for CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) contributions
  • Elected representatives — MPs, MLAs, Panchayat heads
  • NGOs and social organisations
  • Government departments
  • Co-operative societies, banks, institutions

How to Register as Ni-kshay Mitra

  1. Go to nikshay.in
  2. Click "Ni-kshay Mitra" section
  3. Register with your mobile number and basic details
  4. Choose your type (individual / corporate / NGO / elected representative)
  5. Select how many TB patients you want to support and for how long
  6. The system will match you with TB patients in your district or preferred geography
  7. You'll receive the patient's contact details (with patient consent) to begin support

For TB Patients: What is Nikshay Poshan Yojana?

Nikshay Poshan Yojana (part of Nikshay/TB programme) gives ₹500 per month directly to every TB patient notified in the Nikshay system — for the duration of their treatment (6 months for drug-sensitive TB, longer for drug-resistant TB).

This is a separate government benefit. Ni-kshay Mitra support is additional.

TB Patient Nikshay ID

Every TB patient registered at a government DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course) centre gets a Nikshay ID. This ID is needed to:

  • Receive Nikshay Poshan Yojana (₹500/month)
  • Be matched with Ni-kshay Mitras
  • Track treatment progress

To get a Nikshay ID: Register at your nearest government DOTS centre, district TB office, or designated private hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions

I want to support TB patients in my district. How many can I adopt?

There is no upper limit. Corporations and institutions often adopt 10–100 patients; individuals typically start with 1–5. You choose the number and duration on the Nikshay portal.

Is the Ni-kshay Mitra donation tax-deductible?

Contributions to TB patient support through the Nikshay Mitra programme may qualify for tax benefits under Section 80G (for NGO routes) or CSR for corporates. Verify the specific benefit with your CA or the programme helpdesk.

What happens if the TB patient I adopted has completed treatment?

After the patient completes treatment (typically 6 months for DS-TB), the support period ends. You can choose to adopt new patients for further cycles.

Can a family member of a TB patient become a Ni-kshay Mitra to get more support for themselves?

The programme is designed for external supporters (community, corporates, NGOs). Family members can support the patient in other ways, but the formal Ni-kshay Mitra adoption is for non-family supporters.

I am a TB patient. How do I find a Ni-kshay Mitra?

Inform your DOTS provider or district TB officer that you want to be matched with a Ni-kshay Mitra. The matching is done through the Nikshay system based on your district and availability of supporters.
